SpaceCowboy 2010-03-30 | | Stacking VS Spamming | | I have been doing the 10 equal stack thing pretty much since I started, as I was under the impression that it was the best way to make a fleet. I have been noticing though that no one I have attacked or that has attacked me has done this though. In all the battle reports I have, with the exception of 1 time when I attacked someone named Joker who also stacked.
Am I missing something here, If it is supposed to be more effective to stack why do I not see more people doing so? Or was I incorrect in assuming stacking was better, and should also switch to spamming?
P.S. i hate this forum setup. It always defaults my post to some forum that I cant even find. |

DarkMaraudian 99+ day(s) ago | i wasnt saying anything ha ha ha , i just thought it was funny that we both did the same thing but his was nearly x2 mine , and i still won.
something you dont see every day |
sanitarium 99+ day(s) ago | sooo... are we saying a spam defence is a good way to defend against spam offense Dark? what if attacker had a stack with longer range than yours for first attack? |
KnightofNi 99+ day(s) ago | I`m a stacker :)
You just have to learn who the spammers are and hit them on aggressive... works every time :D. |
DarkMaraudian 99+ day(s) ago | how about spamming vs spamming ?

Archaeoptyrex 99+ day(s) ago | Let me stick my neck out and point out the plus points of stacking on defense ... this is mainly relevant to more defensive minded players who like to hoard planets, and not explorers
* If you stack 100% time on defense, you will not lose 100% time ... expect to lose 60-80% time depending on the competition. If you`re not being attacked from 2x regularly, expect to only lose 40-60% time. [rough guesses based on my experience ... race matters a little but not too much]
* Counters don`t hurt as much. If you arere countered from 4 to 1 x pr, with a half-stack expect to pretty much always be wiped. Fully stacked, depending on the attacker, you`re liable to have a few stacks left over (and if they hit on aggressive, you might win defending)
* Similarly, You tend not to lose 3 colonies, 2x1 colony loss or 1x2 colony loss are fairly usual, even from 2x hits. Now if you stack, your counters really should take 3 back. This is fairly important in terms of planet-hoarding. It`s easy to build up a good-sized empire if you never give up clusters you pick up.
* You have ships left over after being attacked ... especially if you protect low-build rate ships in lower stacks; they will survive to fight for you again [useful for turn based server] |
Hiigarans 99+ day(s) ago | 10 equal pr stacks? rofl... i thought this strategy had lost since looooong ago? XD |
HoneyBucket{HH} 99+ day(s) ago | Well that`s one dummy move... another is to always spam spam spam, hundreds of battles and I have yet to see a single stack from him... another is to vm up high forever and ever, because he knows if he were to exit vm he`d be beat down in an instant. |
FOUNDERS 99+ day(s) ago | hmmm wondering what AmericanMinistry has done other than fed hoping from 1 fed to there enemies and then again to there enemies and then again to there enemies |
HoneyBucket{HH} 99+ day(s) ago | Also dummies are players like AmericanMinistry... thinking they are so smart and crafty, yet they are just dummies. |
EnderWiggin 99+ day(s) ago | dummies are stacks consisting only of 1 low pr ship. you want to make sure you have at least 10 stacks at all times or your front stacks will be flanked in battle by your opponents lower stacks. Because of this when players DO spam (or half stack) they usually fill up the remaining stacks with dummies, so that they can avoid being flanked in the first round of combat. |
HoneyBucket{HH} 99+ day(s) ago | A dummy stack is just a stack of any ship of insignificant pr.. could be a single ship. Dummies are just ships that take up spots, but don`t have any other real intention. Just a dummy you know... |
sanitarium 99+ day(s) ago | umm, without admitting my not-smartity what exactly is a dummy stack? Fodder? And I see many people advocating 1-2 stacks of fodder in the front to absorb first wave, although it hasnt worked well for me. I am learning though and GOD help you all when I get it all (or most of it) figured out ;) |
HoneyBucket{HH} 99+ day(s) ago | Me spam fodder, fodder spam fodder... you die, me kill you spam fodder muahahahahahaha.
No but seriously, a lot of great info below. If you don`t know, read below. Focus and learn. And don`t spam fodder. |
Feanor 99+ day(s) ago | SpaceCowboy,
Don`t be afraid to Spam occasionally, on offense or defense. Every race has a few ships that lend themselves well to this, because they have either great range, capture ability, multiple types of offensive weapons or defensive invulnerabilities, or a combination of the above.
Pyth, Borrelly, Galleon, Nirvana, Chlor, Flysch, Lyth, even Tyr, Aragonite, these are good for many situations.
Be sure to have "dummies" underneath your big stack(s), without the dummies, you are almost invariably toast. |
FOUNDERS 99+ day(s) ago | true answer is all forms of stacking and spamming is good depending on the situation. variation is the key and being predictable is your downfall. |
SpaceCowboy 99+ day(s) ago | O_O I got alot more answer than I was expecting. Someone said something about winning 1 battle than losing a 2nd with a stack on defense. I haven`t been playing all that long and that`s happened to me multiple times already.
I also liked the idea of half stacking like 4 or 5 stacks. I am still not sold on the pure spam idea. Seems like you could fail in so many ways doing that. |
sanitarium 99+ day(s) ago | newbie comment: Have found the issue of time spent building a stack detrimental in RT because of the lack of people out of dp makes me a big target as soon as the attack button becomes active. Stacks get jacked up then try to rebuild real quick, come back out of dp, get attacked, endless cycle. Spamming may be (cheap and lazy?) the only way for this newbie to get his head out of the shell to start with. |
Atreides 99+ day(s) ago | defensive spam is really effective also if people dont expect it. you could win the first round but lose 1 col on the second. but if you spam lyth all the time expect to lose 2 battles in a row lol.
i agree mixing up from time to time works well in the long run. |
Deathroe 99+ day(s) ago | This is perhaps the Best, well thought out and articulated discussion on this subject, that I have read - nice work !!
Learn your opponents, and build your fleets to combat them!! Your fleets can be offensive and/or defensive and its important to build according to your position. Finally, you have to keep mixing up you fleet - there is always a counter!!

HouseAtreides 99+ day(s) ago | Most of these answers are very helpful, especially Deil`s and PistolPete`s. Pure Spams can work well with the right ship (like Flysch and Nirv) but ANY strategy used often is a bad strategy. |
