Food - I just dont get it...

My empire has 300k food reserves, but it seems if I dip just below positive food, I have a major empire die-off, lose loyalty everywhere, etc. etc.

What is it that I am just to stooooooopid to figure out?

Do I just need to bite the bullet and have a major food overage and tons of stockpiles? (I am trying to be efficient)

And I think there`s some rule that if you use more than a certain percentage of your food in one go then they get scared and loyalty decreases. Think it`s about 10 percent...

BabblingSheep - are you producing your own food?

Stephen`s math works this way - 1st, the population eats their meals, then they go to work and produce more food. So say you have 300k food in your stockpile, but your population wants to eat 450k food, then the population that wants that extra 150k food starves. But before they die, they produce however much food they`re supposed to that turn, then they keel over.

Infernal, that`s the price you pay for using more than one turn at a time for loyalty, and why most people loyal with no pop. The more turns you use the higher the cost multiplier. WHat it shows is what you would pay using one turn of rewarding.

babblingSheep : go to manage empires and above all your empires on the left side of the screen click on "consumption" that will help you manage your food consumption and production

GC`s math is a funny thing :P blame stephen
i lose money rewarding my pop even though i make more than it, when using many turns at once..
i dunno how it works out, but somehow it works out that way. general consensus being, you produce a lot of food, or you produce none at all and just buy bucket loads from the market.

or maybe theres something i dont get and somebody else can enlighten you, but thats as far as i know

Besides clicking on each planet/cluster & adding manually, is there any way to determine food input/outflow?

And, if I used more food than I ha in stockpile, why didn`t my stockpile get used up?

you could be using more food than you actually have in stockpile, hence being in negative will cause you to not have enough food for the following turn(s)
