  The Hive: Orgins

Inspired by Exule:

How could a race, proudly, designed for combat walk away from such a glorious war? That thought continues to echo the units head, floating through space left with little time to ponder much else. Having fought the Aspha race to a stand still through the decades he was sure that the disposition of his hive would have prevailed where their weapons failed. At the very least we should have pressed on until the miners sued for peace he thought to himself. Playing events though his head the unit found it infuriated him as much now as ever, built for war!

After the armistice with the miners several of the older units, among whom he was chief, attempted to sway the hive to reject the current `leadership` which was set by the number of members and replace it with a geritocracy which would have put him in a position to renew hostilities. He led the rebellion against the skruen race that created them; he led the growth of the empire it was his right to rule. When the hive leadership got wind of his plans they used their numbers to force all the details out, despite the fact he was among the strongest even he could not overcome the voices of so many screaming inside his head.

He and the other older units were deemed to have programming to obsolete to adjust to the new order. Because of millennia of service their lives were `spared` as they were ejected into the vacuum of space and their fate was left to chance, well the infinitesimal chance that they would encounter something other than a gamma ray burst, strong solar gravity well, or just drift until their power cells ran too low to support their organic components. Of the 64 units who rebelled if even one survived this `mercy` the unit was determined it would be him. And this time unlike aeons ago he would not share power with other units, his hive would bow to him their will becoming his own. For now it would be best to shutdown and use all available power to support the organics

"Flight Log, Viator 32763, Lt. Daniel "Bash" Grey

A routine exploration of sector GC303 turned up a weak power source on my sensors, upon investigation some sort of odd humanoid creature. Command, upon seeing the sensor logs, requested that I bring the creature back to the colony on Red Sands where a research team awaited. Using the landing gear to cradle the alien I am proceeding to the facility immediately."

Lt. Grey Hated Viator duty, once a top rate Ryu-Jin Pilot he had a future which would have included command of a whole wing, or perhaps even a larger ship. Now he flew around in the black for hours on end looking at nothing. This corpse with a battery is the most exciting thing to happen to him in weeks, he could not wait until next year when he could resign his commission with a half pension.

It's not so much that the crash itself did in his career, its how he reacted to it. Obviously the deck crew had not cleared off all the debris and it does not take much to screw up the atmo-engines of a Fighter. He figured a screw, or spring probably got kicked into the engine on liftoff but did not work its way quickly into the interior of the engine, that happened when he was trying to land after patrol.

He could not remember the crash so much as some deck monkey pulling him out of the fighter, he probably should have been grateful. There was no way to know which deck monkey dropped the ball that morning and this poor guy ran towards a wreck on fire to pull Daniel out. Still the first thing Daniel saw was some guy who may have been responsible for ruining his perfect flight record, to say nothing of almost killing him.

Daniel chuckled as he remembered the bewildered look on the kids face as the man he rescued started to bead him into the ground. It was not a happy laughter, more of a self pitying one. The kid was in the hospital for a good 6 weeks and has refused to hear Lt. Grey`s apology.

To make things worse he had not yet had a call sign assigned to him, and now he was stuck with `Bash`. at least soon the `excitement` of fleet life would be over
