OS - Birth of a Plague

Sorry, got burned by the character limit. We`ll try this again.

Birth of a Plague

Location: Undisclosed ice world, somewhere in the outermost fringes of Terran space
Military R&D Station – Biowarfare Division
Date: unknown

Audio logs of Chief Science Officer, Lieutenant John Abrams:

Day 1: Strafez poisoning is possibly one of the most terrible ways to die. No one deserves that death, not even these hardened convicts. Alas, we need a new weapon in the war against the increasingly ambitious Marauder incursions. All but a few of the subjects appear to have fatal reactions to strafez infusion. Subjects S07, S13, S32, S44, and S49 are the only ones to survive the infusion. These remaining individuals may be candidates for strain 106.

Day 6: Virus 106 has killed all but one of the remaining test subjects. Subject S32 appears to have incorporated the viral DNA into his own. My lord, he doesn’t even look human anymore! To think it has been less than a week since infection. S32 shows high potential. We’re going to need more subjects…

Day 15: An unforeseen accident has occurred this morning. Subject has come into direct contact with Commander Victor Crowley. Crowley almost died from the encounter, but the subject seems to have somehow managed to keep him alive. My colleagues will not remove subject S32 from Crowley for fear that the action will disrupt whatever is keeping Crowley alive. The virus appears to transform its host’s morphology in the most bizarre manner. Based on this morning’s ordeal, it must also convert the host to a parasitic lifestyle. As far as we can tell, Victor is mostly brain-dead. Further study will be needed. We`re also going to need a replacement officer for Crowley soon.

Day 18: Crowley has come out of his brain-dead state and is recovering at a remarkable rate. We shall continue as planned with this new Crowley-organism combination. Crowley himself is apparently alive as it turns out, but the ‘organism’ is uses him to communicate with us through Crowley’s body. Exchanges have been very rudimentary thus far.

Day 19: Virus 106 seems to cause heightened aggression and strength in its host. We`ve never encountered anything quite like it before. I wonder if we can still use this to our advantage. Perhaps we can salvage this mission after all and I can get off of this frigid rock and back to Terra soon. Crowley tried to attack the researchers behind the observation glass this morning with no success. Again, if only we can harness that aggression and channel toward our goals.

Day 39: The subject has found a way to penetrate his confinement chamber. The facility has been put on lock down, but I do not know how long that will contain the threat. Victor has already infected half the station with Virus 106. Symptoms seem to take hold within minutes. Could there be a mutation in the strain that is causing such accelerated progression? It’s unreal. Whatever the case may be I am afraid that I shall not make it out of the facility alive. My only hope is that the safe room holds these abominations at bay and that my rations last until help arrives. I pray that Terra has received our distress signal.

Day 41: What have we created? God forgive us for what we have done. I fear we have created a monster of unthinkable destruction. If you’re hearing this, I am already dead. I do not have long before the door gives. Before I die, I want to make sure my secret does not die with me. During our studies Virus 106 was able to adapt to everything we threw at it except for one thing. The virus cannot survive a high dose exposure to- (loud crash) OH MY GOD! NO!
(Several gunshots are heard before a series of piercing screams rips through the air to be quickly followed by a crack and thud. Silence…)

Three Days Later…

Victor stood back, looking on as his mindless drones began to reprogram a transportation vessel in the hangar of the now devastated research facility. In an effort to contain the outbreak of the deadly mind-controlling virus that had afflicted more than half of the facility’s personnel, someone had rigged various explosives to go off around the site. Fortunately, the man was killed before he could set up an explosive in the hangar bay, a move that would have left Victor trapped on this icy world with no means of escape. Just then he experienced a terrific migraine. It was the Voice. Victor and the virus shared a common consciousness. While he had complete control over his body, the virus still had a measure of control over his thoughts. The Voice spoke to him, telling him that he would need to travel to the neighboring world of Exule to establish a Hive World from which to expand the reaches of this new race that would come to be called the Viral 106, or simply the Viral. Immediately Victor understood a new purpose for himself… Victor boarded his ship and telepathically ordered his new ‘recruits’ to set a course for Exule. With that, the ship disembarked from the hangar and departed the atmosphere-less ice world. The galaxy had just been made a more dangerous place…
