  Insomnia

It`s roughly 6 am on the east coast right now... the sun will be up in a couple hours and if I fall asleep soon I`ll have a whopping 4 hours of sleep before my rugby game tomorrow... :P I`ve got to imagine there are others of you who have similar problems, any advice?

Basically I ussually try to go to sleep around 1am ish most nights, then after staring at the ceiling for a half hour or so i get restless and play counterstrike and/or this for an hour or so. Then I give sleep another shot, until i ussually fall asleep around 4am. That might be ok if it weren`t for the fact that I wake up at 8:30am every weekday for classes, 10am saturday for Rugby and 9am Sunday for student senate...

Long story short I`m always running on 4-5 hours of sleep or less. I`ve tried exercising, i run a couple miles every day, I do schoolwork and a million things on campus... I`ve gone cold turkey on caffeine... Does anybody have any other ideas or things that have helped them??

thanks...

Go camping one week in the woods. Sleep when sun goes down and wake up when sun rises. that is the real sleeping pattern of a human, without fire ofcourse!!! I did it in Burma in the Jungle and trust me, at 5pm you dont see your hand infront of your face anymore and there is nothing else to do anyways unless you wanna play with leopards and panthers

This works for me.
No caffeine after 6 pm. No sugar after 7 pm.

If you are watching tv or on the computer before bed time, dim lights about 30 minutes before you go to bed like tikimana said.

I did not know it when I tried it, but a recent study indicates some types of artificial light interfere with the natural production of melatonin. CFL`s and so called "natural light spectrum" lights were on the list.

If needed, small does of melatonin coupled with the reduction in light should reset your biological clock.

Hmm, thanks for the advice guys! (here it is at 5am again) But I think I will try the lighting/no comp at night first. If i`m still having trouble maybe I`ll talk to my doc...

melatonin is a hormone released by the pineal gland and is thought to help control circadian rythms such as your wake and sleep cycles, and release of other hormones which tend to be cyclic with in a 24 hour cycle. The release of melatonin is trigger when photo-sensitive cells in the retina cease to be stimulated. This being, if you try melatonin, you should take it at times when you wish to sleep, so that you bodies sleep cycle begins to entrain to that time. Considering that the Pineal gland is smaller in size than a BB, i would think that a 3mg dose would be somewhat of an over kill as that would out weight the pineal gland by quite a bit, and also i think that melatonin is a peptide hormone, meaning that if you take it orally you would probably just digest it. I would recommend talking to a pharmacist or sleep specialist before messing with your brain chemistry...

3mg of melatonin before sleep - a non-prescription natural dietary supplement that the brain naturally secretes available at any drug store. It usually takes a month to really kick in. No side effects, no addiction, and you will still wake up if the fire alarm goes off! I`ve been using it for years to get lots of good sleep!

Oh, uh, erm, this is awkward...
Getting up for Counter-Strike or SFGC are baaad ideas. It doesn`t matter how un-tired you are... those just get you less tired, and train you to stay awake at that time.

My former romantic-cohabitant, of a couple years ago, had many sleep troubles, and investigated all sorts of things to help. Your sleeping place should be isolated from all forms of entertainment (except maybe reading and sex, each of which might help make you tired).

Rather than suddenly turning out the lights, turn them down progressively throughout the evening, until you turn off your final and dimmest lightbulb for bed. It`s biological.
Concentrating on screens can seem like something fully lit, so avoid that at later hours. No quick empire checkups that half-hour before bed.

Sometimes those facemask-blindfold things can help remind you to just keep your eyes closed and NOT stare at the ceiling wondering how all those dots came together on the same plane with such random consistency.

My former bedmate, well, she eventually opted for medication. Tried Rozerem, Lunesta, Ambien...
Rozerem was okay for a time. I didn`t notice a problem with it but she eventually changed. Then she got a long-term Lunesta habit. That seemed to help too... dunno why she stopped that either.
And presently Ambien usually does the trick.

At least, it did last night. But if you don`t fall asleep with it (or if you`re prone to sleepwalking), it might mess you up. She broke up with her latest boyfriend last week. A few nights ago she tried going to bed early. It didn`t work, I guess. She ended up inviting me over with an.... "interesting" premise. She doesn`t think she`d have used the wording she did if it weren`t for being delirious on Ambien.

lol, I smoked this summer when I was in Amsterdam.... It was a blast and your right, I did fall asleep pretty quick. That being said, I`d prefer not to resort to drugs...

Exactly what Opvs said, getting high is the best way to cut those Z`s at night.

some of us are more active when the sun is out... that`s a prob when the sun comes out... coz we`re nightwalkers... :P

perhaps you`re not one of them... but your brain kinda active while trying to sleep... so try to relax and chill out... think of those lovely lambs jump over the fence until everything is blank and fall into darkness... then you remember there`s something in the closet that you`re trying to figure it out what is it all this while.. is it good? is it bad? is it evil?

ok... ok... you just need to relax and rest... that`s all... :)
