  HW quadratic formula work how

Quadratic real world problems
by maaz224 ยป Sun Apr 04, 2010 4:46 pm

Yeh its my homework more like take home test.. but i honostly dont know how to solve this.. and Its worth a test grade.. couldnt find anything in my textbook my teacher is a lunatic can someone help me with this ? Just solve this equatioon ill use it to model my other equations and it will be great help.. or guidence will work too.. just guide me through

MSN works too lol

Maximum profit
what ticket price(s)
would generate a profit of $5424
equation p(x)=-16x^2+800x-4000

usage of quadratic formula just dont know how i know how to use it i get the zeros of 5.635 and 44.364 but how is that generating a profit of 5424 ?
How can i find the ticket price that gives me a total profit of 5424 ? Someone help me

Yeh calculus for me next year lol.. HON algebra 2 ... its not that difficult have a pretty decent grade

alright back to the official awnser

what we do is
5424=-16x^2+800x-4000
9424-800x+16x^2=0

Everything here is divisable by 16 so it becomes a real quadratic its
589-50x+x^2
so
a=1 b = -50 c =589
So plug in quadratic
50 + or - sqrt of 2500 - 4(1)(589)
50 + or - sqrt of 144 / all devided by 2 ( sorry i didnt mention before cause i like solving the top before i do the bottom)
NOW SQRT 144
12 /2 and 50/2
so 25+ or - 6 HOLY dung your right 19 and 31 lol.. Dammit the not-smart teacher told me like wise lol.. She is an not-smart like a holy not-smart... i hate her .. .

wtf lol.. im lost HAhahaha

I didn`t get to do this stuff in HS till Adv Alg/Trigonometry =O He must be at least 15

i always thought otto was like 12 or something , maybe hes just pulling your legs :P

Aww yeah not sure why he wrote that there... he didn`t ask what the maximum profit is... he just wrote maximum profit... i think he`s confused. It seems his class is algebra... and I don`t think you can find the maximum profit without calculus.

HB you do read the words "maximum profit" in his question? Why would he mention that if he is not looking for that too?

Pete he didn`t ask for the maximum profit... stop trying to show off.

*kicks Dark in the shins, claims that 69 is wrong and runs away as quickly as he can

the answer is 69 , if anyone tells you any different they are a newb and you should ignore them , even your teacher...

infact if your teacher has the balls to tell you its wrong , smack him/her in the face repeatedly then inform them that i said this is the answer so it is.

my bad again, thanks VALJA i didn`t even see that negative sign on 16x^2

well it might be too late, but if there is a negative the new answers are 31 or 19, this is probably correct since my first answers were decimals

i really need to stop speed reading.

also Pete i checked and it says that max profit is 5424, but it really isn`t so you can`t use the derrivative of the eqaution solve since you are not locating a point of interest.

but Otto if you put calculus on your test sheet it might get you extra credit who knows

You can find the ticket price that wil give you a profit of 5424$ the way conquers showed you. The maximum profit I would find this way.

Maximum profit is when P(x) in P(x) = -16x^2+800x-4000 has its maximum value. Since the equation has a minus sign in front of the quadraic term, we know that this equation has a maximum and only one maximum.

You can find this maximum by finding the differential of the above equation. You know that when this is zero you got a maximum.

dp/dx = -32x + 800

now put dp/dx = 0 to find maximum.

0 = -32x + 800 <=>
x = 800/32 = 25

And your maximum profit will be:

P(25) = -16*25^2+800*25-4000 = 6000

btw... IF think by logic, it`s a "U" shaped graph and not inverted... coz when x=0, y= -4000... so i think, the values for x1 and x2 should be one with -ve and +ve value... so i guess, you better stick with Conquers` solution... lol...

Conquers` way is correct but not sure IF the minus (-) sign for x^2 is accounted for or not... you better check again OttOmaNS... IF there is no minus (-) sign then follow Conquers` solution...

i hate big numbers so what i will do, i divide to 16... :P

-16^2 + 800x - 4000 = 5424

change to...

-x^2 + 50x - 250 = 339

-x^2 + 50x - 589 = 0

OR

x^2 - 50x + 589 = 0

now use the dang calculater for a,b and c...

x1=19 and x2=31

anyway, quadratic will give you a curve like graph and i`m guessing, the max profit is something like y=5424 since y=p(x) coz "p is function for y" or something like that... lol...

i might be wrong but i had to learn same thing last 2 years... i`m too lazy to open my books so i just hope i didn`t do too much mistake... lol...

just realized i read your problem wrong, i skimed it thought you were asking for where you start to make profit; my bad

if you are looking for when profit is 5424 then you just have to set the equation to 0.

sp 5424= 16x^2+800x-4000 rearranges into
0= 16x^2-800x-9424

then just use the formula like i listed before where:
a=16
b=800
and now c= -9424

this gives the correct answers of 9.84 and -59.84, but once again the answer can only be postive so the answer is 9.84.

hopefully i read your problem correctly this time :)
