  Workout Music

So what kind of music do you prefer while working out?

Personally, it depends on my mood.

Most of the time I like hardcore music, bands like Metallica and Godsmack. This type of music helps me harness my anger which allows me to fine more strength within myself. Especially when I am lifting heavy weights.

Other times I prefer mellow music, like Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley... this helps me find a groove and get into a zone sometimes. Especially while doing cardio or endurance exercises.

And sometimes I just find music distracting and I can focus better without any at all.

Personally when I`m running I listen to trance... I don`t seem to notice the time or most of all the length of the run.

When I`m practicing MMA I listen to songs that amp me up and make me wanna punch a hole through someone`s face. Like, What You Gonna Do by Lil Jon or Victory by Notorious

hmm... things seem to have taken a turn for the deep and philosophical... o.O
On a semi related note, very little (including music) actually effects my actual energy level at the gym. I just use it to block out other people.
However, I have found that I am able to get the best workouts when I`m angry or frustrated with life school etc. I dunno if its the adrenaline or what, but when I go to the gym angry I`m able to channel that anger into lifting heavier weights for more repetitions than I am ever able to do calm... no matter how focused.

Lol... What do I listen to when I work out? I listen to the sounds of rememberance. Things done or said in the past can give you more energy then music can. As long as you`ve had an interesting life. If you`ve done nothing then you suck and should just go with classical music, because it`s beautiful.

perfect silence would be awesom , but no gym have i gone too that has provided the perfect enviroment for it , you will always have some not-smart clashing the weights , someone next to you running on a treadmill lifting weights in a noisy manner or some crabpy behind radio channel on throughout the gym , although theres a hotel near me that if you get in early enough for the gym , 7am or so , although theres people in their , the pool sauna jaquize steamer etc are empty and without music , now that makes me feel good , so i hear you on the perfect silence. shame i cant enjoy it in the actual gym section

Flashy very good point there. For me it really depends on my mood and train of thought. When I am in the proper mood, music becomes noise and is distracting. I find the zone perfectly on my own and do not need anything else. Other times my mind is distracted within itself and I cannot seem to focus. At these times music is of great benefit as I can focus on the rhythm of a song and become more focused in general, tuning out the distractions within my head. But yes, ideally you should be able to obtain a better workout in perfect silence.

i watch dvd`a on my phone while in the gym , its a perfect method to keep your eyes off how long you have left etc.

but if i was to listen to music eye of the tiger makes me chuckle thinking about it...

Music distracts me from setting the mind focused and going into the "zone" where the outside world disappears and existence is the mind and the body. "working out" can be done at night with the partner <g>. For me, to be in really good shape, one should meld the mind with the body as a working unit, healthy together and when one ails, the other kicks in to focus healing the damage.

It seems these days people need noise, forgetting the symphony is natural and self created, not canned noise .

AC/DC, John Cougar, and Queen. Tried Pearl Jam, STP, Creed, Nazerath, and B.O.C. Didn`t work. Tried Aerosmith, RUSH, and Van Halen (pre Sammy) still no good.

So AC/DC, John Cougar, and Queen are it for me.

Guess I`ll have to try some old Carlos Santana or Eagles tonight.

haha good deal... yeah some people are just born runners. And yes it is one of the least fun ways to exercise, one of the most painful for sure. But that`s the beauty of it... long distance running especially, it`s all about who can endure the most amount of pain and keep going.

thnx! :D
This is the first semester I`ve ever run (its pretty much the least fun way to exercise ever). But my dang roomates convinced me to start training with them for a marathon... :P ironically I can now run faster than them and they both did cross country in high school. XD

I like Linkin Park, Disturbed, and Headstrong by Trapt when I`m lifting, and more epic stuff like Nightwish and Evanescence when I`m running. On a semi-related note (and cuz i feel like bragging even though i know none of you give a rat`s ass... lol) I crushed my personal record of 5 mins and 5 secs, by running a 4 minute 53 second mile today. :D

i listen to classical music the slower the better...it helps me focus on form not waste effort on crabpy reps =P ...honestly a lot of times when i lift i do slow steady reps... for aa bicep curl slow it down to 10 secs up and 5 down etc ..you`ll notice a huge diff vs just trying to pump them since thats just alot of rocking motions that raw muscle power
