HelmsDeep 2010-01-29 | | GC Revival | | When I started on GC years ago, it was so active that you couldnt even get a solid 10 stack build out of newbie protection without getting hit, and if you actually managed to get one built, forget attacking someone, you were about to be hit. Now, it is like a ghost town. Ive sat out of DP for hours with nothing but scouts and never even had so much as another empire go past me in pr;and that was me sitting out at 50k pr. Id like to see a revival of GC, to see it get back to its days like it used to be when I started. I realize it is the same as it always been, and perhaps that is the problem with it. UC has taken a lot of time from Stephen and others to completely change the way it was, and although it is personal opinion as to what it has become vs. the old UC, nonetheless, it has changed. I dont want GC to change, however some updates or ideas would be great, something to jump start GC, but different changes than UC to keep them seperate. For starters, I would like to see NPC empires that we can hit, and not just a few, but NPC empires at all PR levels, and with different skill levels, that give out juicy planets or rewards for taking them out. Unlike in UC, we dont have a `project` that allows us to keep our infra when we change race, but it would be kinda interesting to see certain planets or have something that gives a research bonus for a certain period of time, that allows a player to skill faster. Or when defeating a NPC player, you get a bonus of some sort of rare capsules...whatever the small changes, the idea is lets get some! All Im suggesting is lets get some updates for GC to spice it up a bit, to encourage growth and playability on this side of the Spacefed game, but without destroying the game as it is, or completely changing the core of this game so much that it doesnt even look like GC anymore. |

HelmsDeep 99+ day(s) ago | How about a subtle change of allowing the Virals to reverse any 9 ships they want to from the races they currently can now? That is just one small change that could work well in GC, and then each Viral would more than likely have different shipyards...just dreams I know, but would be nice to see something new in GC |
ImaVirusOhNoz 99+ day(s) ago | i dont necasarily think rewarding leaders with bonuses for active members will work that well because it might end up being abused by the active players who want the artis and projects so theyll make fed after fed to get them >.> good idea but i think it MIGHT be abused a little :P i know i needed cred reserves when i was new >.> like a few million at one time <.< |
Joker 99+ day(s) ago | Yes, I agree a time limit should be impose on such special abilities
Addtionally
Maybe some sort of bonus should be given to federation leaders, proportional to the amount of active players?
- 60 Random Common Orbs / Day Project for 5 Active Players In The Federation
- 20 Random Uncommon Artifacts / Day Project for 10 Active Players In The Federation
- 10 Random Rare Artifacts / Day Project for 15 Active Players In The Federation
- 10 Regalos Artifact / Day Project for 20 Active Players In The Federation
Hopefully this will spread out experience players to form their own federation and recruit new players to their federations and to keep them active
&
Maybe Guides/Admins should be given the power to tribute credits to new empires, whenever a tribute is sent the message is also sent to all guide/admin`s important events to ensure check and balance
Have Fun

ImaVirusOhNoz 99+ day(s) ago | yea islander i wont play though but rarely :D i got tired of the point and shoot and the run around kill stuff get gold and repeat process :P that IS why i keep playing :) i tried gettin em to sell hoodies one time >.> didnt work :( youd have to put a time limit of some of those things too joker O.o otherwise ya got moondo artifacts everywhere and it gets rediculous O.O just my 2 cents :) i do like what your sayin though joker :) |
Joker 99+ day(s) ago | I feel that it's impractical for older players to expect Stephen not to put items/functions for sales and donations. Maybe example
1 Month + 100 % Chance of Finding Artifacts
1 Month + 100 % Mineral/Food/Goods Bonus
I Tech Project
Ability To Bring Over Colonies In A Restart
Ability To Bring Over Research In A Restart
+ 5 Levels Research
I feel rather then restrict total sales of items/functions, it is wiser to carefully filter which items/function would be a benefit but not overly unbalance the nature of the game.
More Money = More Advertising
More Money = More Updates
Almost every online web based game has a donation page that sells some sort of items/functions other then the basic paid account/subscription.
.
To get a quick boost of players, maybe the opening of the Dark Marauder Race might lure UC players? Trying to balance current ships again and again might create more irritation then boost player counts?

Islander Game-Admin 99+ day(s) ago | I think Opus, you just brought up a point I`ve been thinking about for a bit but that I do not think I have seen mentioned often - GC does certainly lack graphics. And it`s other item that is probably a problem - It`s incredibly high learning curve and skill cap. Even UC is very high as compared to the popular games of today.
Look at your Console FPS`s, Halo or Call of Duty - All someone needs to do is turn on their console, hit join game and roll around and shoot people. These games have millions of players online at any one time. Compare that to learning to manage an economy, getting clusters and learning to stack, I imagine many opt for the `point and shoot` games.
Same goes for your client-based MMO`s, like World of Warcraft or Aion. Both also have millions of players online at any one time, and are quite simple when compared to our game here...
But that is what makes GC different and is the reason most of us still play it despite it`s faults.
/end random chatter. |
ImaVirusOhNoz 99+ day(s) ago | i would so play a NPC :D only thing i like to do anymore is fight >.> |
OpusDei 99+ day(s) ago | well, ronex, there was a time in which Lucas, Asmodai, Kalzul or random D.Maru empires would be in the ranks giving this opportunity to the players. Full balanced stack wins would be rewarded with awesome planets or ships...
the market was also being repumped regularly by the system avoiding total mineral shortage..
all this was before i left...i think few people were working hard together to get this going and running properly with constant fresh ideas flowing in by experienced players.on top of that heaps of ships were added or modified so i wouldn't exactly say nothing has been done. maybe gc lacks in advertisement and a owner who cares and thats about it.
or maybe its because people now a days prefer to play games that contain animations, graphics or the perception of 3 dimensions etc...maybe text based games are just ''oldschool'' and the youth of today is looking for newer more active games...a simple benchmark would reveal this problem.

AccordEX 99+ day(s) ago | Squaks, stephen would let someone come live in his house, and blog 24/7 |
AccordEX 99+ day(s) ago | Wow its HelmsDeep, nice to see you around. |
ronex 99+ day(s) ago | The concept of NPCs is an interesting one, that would sadly take a fair amount of work.
It would certainly solve a major problem, that being a lack of targets. Most players (myself included) do not want to leave DP early and would rather use the time to research. This of course results in very few unprotected players. A few NPCs would give others a chance to fight. Especially the poor old Marauders who NEED to fight to survive.
The increased availability of combat would likely exacerbate the mineral shortfall, but that could easily be offset by the reward system. I am imagining that the NPCs would be fairly difficult (low base pr?), and have a variety of stack systems that would be randomly selected, inhibiting the players ability to attack fully prepared. As a result, the fighting would be risky, so I would have no objections to the attacker being able to "reclaim" some of the minerals used in the now destroyed enemy ships. This would have to be a small amount (We don`t want to make the miners unhappy, do we?) likely even less than was necessary to make the attack.
Perhaps a variety of enemy strengths (not just PRs) is in order. We could have the relative difficulty of the NPC be represented by their race. Easier (still fairly rough) challenges could be Dark Marauder (granting some random planets and a token amount of minerals) while the insane enemies who would likely destroy most fleets could be KalZul (may need to add some new ships to them for this. Powerfull ones with low PR). The bigger challenges would obviously need a bigger reward. Maybe rare capsules as HelmsDeep suggested.
There are many ways of handling this concept, and with a little balance work (I volunteer to help! Please don`t let that daunt you, Stephen!) it could be a great addition.
TLDR
I like it. |
Squaks 99+ day(s) ago | CK stephen would probly get someone to do it for free somehow |
CollectiveKing 99+ day(s) ago | or Stephen can blog himself for free |

EnderWiggin 99+ day(s) ago | Yeah, I know i`ll click on an online game ad if looks interesting enough... dang you Evony... so disappointing lol |
GradualIncline 99+ day(s) ago | I was 03 as well, good year :) Of course, I think I signed up for more than a dozen games that day, GC is the only one I`ve played fairly continuously, and these days I only play one other one now, mainly because I`m an admin there :P makes it hard to leave, though that game is pretty much dead. |
Raistilin 99+ day(s) ago | i remember i was sitting on my gf`s couch, my brother and I were madly searching for free online games to play. I got a urge to check out space games. 2 hours later i found Gc. This was back in 2003, been here ever since. |
GradualIncline 99+ day(s) ago | *thinks way, way back to when he first joined* uhhh, I think it might have been google where I found the game, lol. I was in a game craze at the time, and so I googled something like Online Space Games, and found it. I can`t remember exactly what I put, it was a long, long time ago now. |
ewpleasedont 99+ day(s) ago | Yep thats how i found GC as well, advertising |
Deathroe 99+ day(s) ago | Advertising - its how I found GC :) |
