kailin 2008-06-01 | | Best income option? | | I know that on UC everyone thinks taxing`s the best option, but is it the same in GC? Here there are no ministers, no empire levels, etc - none of the perks that taxing gives on UC...
I started off with commercial, but realised it got me next to nothing. Then I tried food, but food prices seemed a bit too unstable. Now I`m on taxing, with around half my planets on agriculture to feed the population.
Hoping for an expert to enlighten me... |

ragnarok 99+ day(s) ago | oh, and it`s dependable also because as long as you sell your food below everyone else`s you`re always assured of a sale. |
ragnarok 99+ day(s) ago | well speed, considering that food very rarely goes below 4 per unit, I don`t think that`s an issue.
Suppose that you can make 1,000,000 a turn with your current research levels and land size in commercial.
Well in agriculture, the range would be anywhere between 1 - 4 million a turn given the same research levels and land size in agriculture as long as you sell at 5 food per unit or higher. Considering that food sells anywhere between 5 and 25 at any given time, I think you`re guaranteed 97% of the time to make at least as much as a commercial Terran as long as you sell all your food as soon as you make it. |

How is agriculture more dependable than commercial? When obviously your income off food DEPENDS on market prices. Where as being commercial, you`re all on your own, and your income depends only on YOU.
Having your income walk hand in hand with the market is the opposite of dependable. Especially when you`re comparing it to a self-sufficient empire such as commercial. |
Deiloche 99+ day(s) ago | Agri, for terrans at least, beats commerce at four per unit of food or higher. The price of food does NOT have to be high, as long as you`re selling, for it to be better than commerce. And you make a LOT less money with commerce... though you`re not reliant on the market. *shrugs* To each their own. |
Bladactania 99+ day(s) ago | My point exactly. With Commercial there`s really no downside. You make a little less money, but still more than you need. |

Maraudian 99+ day(s) ago | tax has alot of up and downs , same with all but commercial really |
Sol 99+ day(s) ago | Tax i suppos is techniaclly the best.
strip mining ore is quite nice short term.
also with the current food prices an agri empire works preety well at the moment. |
ThEpAkIsTaNIeMpIrE 99+ day(s) ago | kailin, try putting 5k loyalty also, it helps alot. |
Bladactania 99+ day(s) ago | The problem with agri is the reliance on the market. Granted the cost of food isn`t usually low enough to hurt your bottom line. But you DO have to wait for your stuff to sell. This can make the initial start-up somewhat difficult. With commercial, you have guaranteed income every turn you use. You never have to worry about any prices or what you have on hand or whatever. You only need a meager amount of food to feed your people (if you keep them) which is easily obtained if you happen upon even a small sized U. Fertile. Then all you need is minerals for your ships and that`s it. With taxes, you have to worry about your huge base PR, which is a bigger obstacle in turn based servers than RT given the smaller number of players.
All in all, commercial will make you the least amount of money. With the right price of food you can make more money with agri (when the price is high) or with taxes (when the price is low). In fact the price would have to be quite bad before you would make more with commercial. But in my opinion, the convenience of commercial far outweighs it`s negatives. Also, ask anyone, once you`ve got past the initial stages, you can make more money than you`ll spend no matter what method you choose, so why not go with the easiest.
Please note that this holds true for Terrans (and Virals) only. But there are similar arguments for most races. With A. Miners you can go CGs, minerals, or tax. Each race has their own strengths. It really doesn`t make much difference since money is pretty easy to come by. |
Deiloche 99+ day(s) ago | Tax or agri unless you`re a marauder. (Some races are not very good with one or the other.) |
EphemeralEternity 99+ day(s) ago | 1 tenth of your pop is added to your pr |
kailin 99+ day(s) ago | Ah... looks like there isn`t any clear winner... I`ll stick to tax for a while, then try switching to different types for comparison once I`ve saved up enough money and ore...
BTW I didn`t realise pop added to base PR... how much does it add? |
EphemeralEternity 99+ day(s) ago | agg is a nice way to go especially when the food stays at or above 10 |
Ishamael 99+ day(s) ago | agri is the way to go HANDS down. i dont care what yall are saying, as long as the market maintains a stable 5 per food, then you`re making just as much or even more with food as commercial, granted that you have an equal amount of land (Plus with terran, the yeild is much higher since the planet types make a difference.) anyways, just my thoughts. agri is more dependable imo. |
ThEpAkIsTaNIeMpIrE 99+ day(s) ago | eph its debatable, alot of people like agri, but commercial is good option. |
FireStormZ 99+ day(s) ago | Kailin,
With a terran its going to be commerce for a few reasons
1) You ont need a population to support it after you fully populate a planet you can set up commerce and then plunder all but one housing unit
2) It it independent of the market the ebb and flow of prices will not effect your income
3) It keeps you off of the market for all but minerals |
EphemeralEternity 99+ day(s) ago | well income depends on the race, and what you want out of it...as a terran if you want pure income with the least worry and work...then commercial is the way to go...food is a very good source of income but it`s not always as dependable...and tax can yeild alot of money but your base pr and food prices become problematic...if you want to pm me on rt we can talk more i don`t mind...but also listen to other peoples opinions too |
