First of all let me say that I am wearing my fireproof suit, so flaming will not get you anywhere on this topic (I know a few of you will try anyway). Here are my top 5 real time strategy games.
1. Empire Earth 2- If you haven`t tried this game yet, I highly suggest it. Play this game for a few weeks and I promise you that you will never go back to Age of Empires. Beautiful graphics, enjoyable and challenging SP campaigns, excelent MP options, and by far the best interface I`ve come across. Simply put, this game is the complete package, especially if you get the expanison pack, which adds some really usefull features, such as the ability to draw up and auto execute detailed war plans, and the ablity to create custom races.
2. Starcraft- Hard to beat a classic. While games such as AoE and Empire Earth focus on lots of features and widgets, Starcraft is like chess. It uses a simple interface with just a few races to create a surprisingly deep game. There is a good reason why Starcraft has maintained and even increased in popularity over the years while so many others have faded away.
3. Age of Empires II: Age of Kings- A great game in and of itself, more interesting perhaps was the spinoff game Galactic Battlegrounds. GB took the AoK engine and used it to create a great star wars game (actually the only real star wars strategy game prior to Empire at War). |

-StarCraft pwns. I preordered StarCraft II the day EBGames started accepting preorders... I`m one of the first in line, ahahahaha, for a game not set for release until at LEAST october 2008. ^^;
I don`t know about the rest of Command and Conquer... but Yuri`s Revenge is terrible. Nor do I know about WarCraft I or II... though since they are much like StarCraft (WarCraft III focused more on heroes rather than strategy, which is why it sucks) I would probably rate them highly.
I haven`t owned Age of Empires, but I played a little of one of them in a store... my memories of that were one of the motivating things to get me to play StarCraft, so a definite hell yes there.
Supreme Commander... eh... nice interface... excessively simplistic. There is nothing TO that game. The only reason I bought and played that game was for something to do with friends that won`t play StarCraft with me (basically, almost all of them, unless they don`t mind losing) because I anihalate them with ease...
I believe Civilization is RTS? I haven`t played the game, but from what I`ve heard of it, it`s pretty good.
*Note: I`m obsessive-compulsive (why do you think I`m still playing spacefed, almost four years later...) so I avoid starting new games. ^^;* |

on total annihilation kingdoms, i used to build a wall that was almost impossible to break down, only way would be 200 units attack it, in wave after wave. lol

thats how good TA kingdoms is. The enermy never gives up, never stops, rebuilds fast, and attacks faster :P
its a proper high speed startergy, wicked game :P
it was like one of the first games i ever played on PC. and i play it even now. i`ve proble spent like 2,000 hours on that game, cos i can remember playing it day in/day out lol and we are talking years lol |

also, Dune is a joke like Red Alert series too :P nothing more than spam. u can try to spam in CoH, WarHammer or HomeWorld series. i bet u will die off very quick in no time LOL |

but C&C series, i only agree on the General n Zero Hour. yes, that there is nothing more than spam in Red Alert series (fuk the rocketer n mirrage tank spam for RA2, LOL) n Tebrium series.
no doubt, HomeWorld series will always have my place on RTS. it is the 1st RTS use the squad mode concept in HW2.
soon, WarHammer series which is the 1st game that combine all the obstacle, limited population, squad units and other factors that make the RTS even need more statergy n tatic when playing.
soon, here come the more advanced : CoH aka Company of Heroes. man, i love CoH :P |

I used to play warcraft 2 some too, and that was a sweet game as well. Warcraft 3 is ok, but obviously a lot of changes were made to the point that it`s barely the same game. |

Dune II was great, the genre defining game.
And then Dune 2000 (Dune III) was an INSULT to all players, common a year after C&C you can not sell a game any more, where you can not mark a group of units but you have to click on each separately.......
This was one of the biggest disappointments of my youth, directly followed by Rebel Assault..... |

2.) Starcraft: The classic that never gets old, and after all these years, is still much more enjoyable than 98% of new RTS.
Those are what matter to me. Not a complete list of five, but hey. Those games were truly revolutionary. |

99+ day(s) ago | God, ive played all the C&C games and their expansions, I must recommend the classic Red Alert with Aftermath and Counter-Strike expansion packs.
Lately though its been the Tiberium Wars thing that takes the cake, i love C&C, took me 2 days to beat all the missions though, and those 2 days my grades fell by at least a letter lols
Starcraft now with its new Starcraft 2, servers will be jammed with S2 now ... its going to be so popular, all my friends pre-ordered it.
AoE is a game trying to become a classic, i belive its great.
Uhm, there was another Space Star Wars game that had some strategy, but i bet you dont remember it because they only sold a few hundred thousand copies.
StarWars Rebellion, now sure this was back in 1997-98 i think, not as great graphics, but fun.... I still play both Empires at War sometimes and Rebellion.
But alas, im not waiting on S2 as much as Half-Life 2, Episode Two ... finally get to keep playing the story line. I really love the graphics that is put into the game. |
