  Just wanting weigh ins here...

So I know I troll a lot and talk smack and blah blah blah, but I actually have something serious I want to bring up.

Ever since I was really young I always wanted to be a soldier. I loved the ideas of fighting for freedom and such, but I was just a child. Now I`m 17 and gonna be graduating in a couple years, and I want to make my dreams a reality. But I have only one thing still standing in my way, which is my mother. I`m her only child and she doesn`t exactly want me to put my life on the line like that. I love her, but I want to go into the military. What should I tell her?

I know mixing personal problems in with games aren`t always good, but I need a little help here. . .

I can, assure it doesnt get any easier on that descison. All I knew was honor loyalty respect. Military style bringing up. And what i geared for. But I being the only one to carry on the family name, made a promise to not,go. Probably the only regret in life I have had.

Don`t let your parents dictate what you can do with your life. For me blood sweat and tears is part of life. For you it may not be. But I can assure you if you join it will be forced upon you..

And if you do decide to go. Go navy or air force. That`s coming from a family of all marines and army.

If you ran cross country or something you probably did, but for people that don`t train regularly they don`t get faster at mid-long distance as they get older. My little brother ran a sub 6 min when he was in 5th grade, which is faster than like 80% of my army unit can do.

Not a bad start. You should shoot for at least a 14 minute 2 mile by the time you ship off to basic though. Don`t be content with the minimums, especially with PT. It`s the best way to distinguish yourself and will get you awards, promotions, and better treatment/privileges through training.

Have you done any training yet? Do you know how fast you can run a 2-mile? Or how many push ups/situps you can do in 2 mins?

I might be needing to switch career paths myself... I would consider cyber warfare as well, if not for the technical aspect, certainly for you mother`s sake ;)

Cyber warfare.... Not exactly `putting your life on the line` with that career path, I can assure you. So your mom should be able to sleep at night.

I should clarify, when you look at cyberwarfare, they are looking at specific branches of critical infrastructure and I only know of the nuclear energy side, but most critical targets such as refineries, nuclear power plants, etc. have to have safeguards in place IT wise which is managed by the company and the DoD. I only heard about attacks at one of the facilities I had audited as they had to have 3 dummy systems and one internal system that was not connected to the world wide web.

Like, Cyber Warfare Defense or more along the lines of Cyber Warfare Setup/Maintenance/Etc? This is a heavily growing arm of the air force and does require some good level of IT knowledge both programming and/ or more Database/networking side.

Sorry, maybe I should`ve also thrown out what I want to DO in the military. I have no desire to fight. I am into Cyber Warfare. Hacking.

Grasshopper, you are asking the wrong question. The Question is, what should I use my life to fight for? Life is a struggle, for food, shelter, happiness. To fight with guns implies you must kill to solve problems - Really?

Most anyone can use a weapon. And, in some cases, necessary. But, how many deaths will it take to make this world a better place?

However, if you truely want to fight for Freedom, Justice and the Pursuit of Happiness, then go to college, start a business, create jobs, provide an environment where people have an opportunity to LIVE.
