FISTFULLOFDOLLARS 2011-08-10 | | My unspoken Secrets Revealed | | I was finding myself talkingsomething in the chat today and realized after years of playing, I have only really discussed it one or two other times...It`s part of every players gameplay, it feel like a secret that many know, nobody shares.
We`ve talked the "how to battle" and "how to make good economy" talks countless times before. What of the players that know how battles work, know what the good ships are, have a strong economy, but still get womped on and navigate the game like newbs? Someone has provided us all with a well designed shortcut. That someone is Anfit.
However, there is a problem still... When did (i assume) the average player start using anfits mods? After the learned that 2 things are NOT against the rules. These things are 1. The F5 button and 2. Tabbed-browsing.
If you are not tabbed browsing, you are hopeless. If you are not using f5 you are hopeless. You will be a well researched empireat best without these 2 things.
If an aminer is restarting and selling cheap or free minerals I am refreshing (F5ing) constantly to be the quickest buyer when they hit the market. If I`m doing that they will only appear for a split second. And to be even QUICKER make sure there are already available posts of minerals on the market. This will trigger the Cost to not be N/A. You can then input 9999999 and it will still be there during your refreshing. If Cost says `N/A` you must have 9999999 already copied and ready to paste as fast as you can to get the post!
Ever hear, "Oh I didn`t 10 stack because I didn`t finish building my first stack or first few before I was attacked"? Tabbed-browsing is the solution to allll your problems! What I like to do is build a 300k PR ten stack (or less!) with 10 tabs all in their own window. As my turns accumulate I just right click and select "refresh all." Now my 300k pr 10 stack is a 600k pr. Next time I "refresh all" it will be 900k and so forth!
What are some of YOUR behind the scenes secrets? |

Omegian 99+ day(s) ago | Heh, I really hope I am not showing my age by not doing this or my newbness because I no longer do this :P |
AccordEX 99+ day(s) ago | I also use a calculator like grant speaks of, but 90% of the time i am to lazy to use it as most players are to predictable anyway.
Also i rarely use f5 now days anyway same reason for omeg, and i do not ever use tabbed browsing, i don`t think i am hopeless ?
As far as a hidden secret that many people know of, i guess the loop hole that gives unlimited turns =p |
warmonger11 99+ day(s) ago | i would argue that tips improve not just playability of the game, but enjoyment as well
the game really takes on a new life if you change your perspective on it, once you get the ins and outs of stacking and how to defeat an opponent, try to make it "multiplayer"
this was much easier in pre-07 when there were dozens of active feds, and having battle royales nightly was how we did it... which leads me to my next thread since i think it would be too much of a topic changer for this thread |
grantweep 99+ day(s) ago | You are right omeg, predicting other people`s fleet is not a huge deal. It`s being able to beat others, with them knowing your fleet that is impressive. |
Omegian 99+ day(s) ago | Hmm, sad I dont really tab or f5 that much anymore, hell i stopped doing that ever since activity died down in 07`, since then I can easily do it all within 1-2 windows, not multi tabs.
As for a fleet building calculator, you can tell what they are building pretty easily by their class and style of play. At least to me anyhow, so the stack calc never really would be useful for me now. |
GradualIncline 99+ day(s) ago | ninja fingers and a better computer/internet connection than you`ve got THX.
Doesn`t take long to log in, set VM, then log back out. Couple seconds really. Some people will do that when checking in on the ranks, especially during UWs. They`ll log in, see if an attacker is getting near to hitting the UW, then log back out, so it doesn`t show them online, and the attackers think the defender isn`t there, and so don`t attack him. If you`re really sneaky, you can even log into another server, cue up all the ships you want to build in tabs, then log into the server you want to build, build, enter the empire you want to attack, and attack all in a couple heartbeats. Then, depending on the situation, you can rebuild, log back out, and get ready to pounce again, you enemies thinking you were just lucky to get on when you did.
This tactic can sometimes save you from people attacking you from far below, since many empires would prefer to wipe the enemy without much damage to themselves, they`ll attempt to build past you to attack form above. If they see you online, they might not bother, and attack you before you attack first, especially if they know what kind of fleet you have from a fedmate/ally. Appearing offline, and only popping in to check the ranks before logging back out, might stall an attack, and when you feel like it, you can get on, potentially shift your stacks slightly, and have at him, after he`s spent turns trying to get past you.
Man, I carried on a lot more than I`d intended XD |
THX1138 99+ day(s) ago | is there a secret about setting vacation mode without being online? |
FISTFULLOFDOLLARS 99+ day(s) ago | A long tine ago I made a calc like that and worked great for spammers, but it was all manually inputting the pr change and looking for whole numbers. |
MajorDinero 99+ day(s) ago | lol, im just kidding rag. Sort of. Tried designing a calc like this before, but it never worked out due to the sheer amount of ships that one can build. You can never be sure what your opponent`s fleet is :P |
mazuku 99+ day(s) ago | The calculator is a rather cheap thing to use >.> I`ll track a person`s build if I can tell their spamming but that`s doing the work myself not some cheeky algorithm. I also keep an updated excel ships list on my computer for quick reference to counter stack/spam. When I`m not in VM :P |
Ragnarok 99+ day(s) ago | I`d like to see this calculator for myself grantweep. :P |
Ishamael 99+ day(s) ago | I never used anfits or tabbed browsing. I like to think I`m a little more than a well researched empire at best. |
Apollo 99+ day(s) ago | using scouts to explore to 1 turn required to gain a new planet that way you can get a quick border if you win something nice.... doesnt work if you win 64 planets in 1 hit tho >.> |
KingHippie 99+ day(s) ago | I have a notepad file (Mostly outdated now, since I just came back) that lists different playes, and stacks that they are known to use. I`ll update and compare as I go along.
If I want to hit (insert random empire here), then I look at the notepad and see what his most common stacks are. Most players have a few that they are fond of, and simply switch between them to keep from being too repetitive.
I also separate their stacks based on pr ranges. Some players play completely different stacks based on what pr they are looking to get to, and this helps to further narrow down what stack I think they are using.
I guess in the end it`s just putting to use the power of sheer raw data. |
grantweep 99+ day(s) ago | a calculator that uses some sort of algorithm to figure out exactly what ships your opponents built, with a power capable of detecting up to 10 simultaneous builds. |
warmonger11 99+ day(s) ago | excel spreadsheets, lots of them |
