Fuzzy 2011-05-14 | | Retiring from UWing | | To the GC community,
I’ve now played GC for over 3 years. As I move on in life, I’m finding that I cannot play GC like I have in the past. Somewhere along the line, this game became all about UWing for me. I guess I was really inspired by the UWs I saw in my early days, especially those by DrunkenMasters and Deiloche. I later had an opportunity to work with these two great players when TCF and CW were allied in a big war against the UTU. Over time, our cooperation extended to the other TB servers.
As I retire from UWing, I’m reflecting on what drove me to UW so much. First of all, it’s apparently the “goal” of the game… after finishing missions I think there was some message there encouraging empires to UW. The introduction of UW rewards made it attractive to UW than to keep some of my very good empires. In my mind, UWs are the culmination of lots of effort…the product of a long period of time of building an empire, amassing artifacts, and accumulating wealth. I very much enjoyed the challenge of planning out UWs, particularly the fleets: determining the best ships and the arrangements of them I could make with my limited resources, and working with friends to decide on an optimal fleet. I was quite the perfectionist with my UW plans – I guess that’s a big reason why I succeeded in all my attempts but also why I often faced very limited opposition. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, was the teamwork part of UWing. Some of my fondest memories are of working together with my allies to defend UWs, and in pulling off chain UWs. I want to acknowledge the supporters of each of my UWs, particularly DM and MD/Grant for being with me through all of my 9 UWs – I could not have been this successful without your help.
It’s fitting that this last UW was on Normal, the server where it all began for me. I will continue to play, but a lot less than I have in the past. I do really hope that GC will be more active in the future :)
Cheers! Fuzzy |
