IF you`re not ready to be attacked by others, remember this primary rules...

- stay below 5000 PR (NP for Newbie Protection) until you`re ready to face the "reality" of a wargame...

...by not...

- explore planet more than 2 at one time (excluding the HW - Home World)

- building ships to go higher than 5000 PR

...IF you`re building infras on your planets...

- always refresh by relogin to check your true PR coz you might see below 5000 PR but others can see you above the 5000 PR

- your rising population will make your PR rises too, remember that always

even though they might not read the forum in the beginning but i hope others can contribute simple rules for new players to follow... IF only this thread can be bumped like the old time... :)

Exactly Islander... Somebody with max infra and the amount of activity that VALJA does, would cause large fluctuations even in the RT market. With large amounts of land * infra * turns spent, diversification becomes more viable.

Loof, you really aren`t taking empire type into account. One of your own fedmates noted something quite nicely - With enough land diversification is a far better way to go. Otherwise you kill the market.

again... i must remind that my way is an alternative... i`m the "minority"... and i`m playing for long term... i don`t wish to do UW... i need to be flexible to fit the situations... so i choose to be self-sufficient...

so new players... beware of taking the same path as me.... you`ll be condemned.... lol...

UberPansy... i`ve tried it in the beginning, when i noticed that i had to depend solely on the market, i knew for sure i`m not going to take that path.... the market can be manipulated... ;)

anyway, there is a saying... "IF ain`t broken, don`t fix it"... :)

That`s all fine and good, but have you tested your experienced way against the way some others are suggesting? There`s nothing to be said for someone stuck in their ways you know. As a Terran, if you pursue the commercial economic path you are already extremely self-sufficient. Goods are a luxury. Food is a necessity, but unless you are on a server with literally zero food I don`t see why you would think you need to produce your own.

well i`m not going to point which one is the best or better... i`ve presented my argument on why i prefer being a self-sufficient terran coz it works nicely all this while on me... the market fluctuation doesn`t affect me at all... i hope don`t stop the creativity on new players as long they`re doing it legally...

5 yrs ago i was doing it with RT and now i`m doing it the same with other servers... almost the same ratio... i`m just giving an alternative that i personally certified thru my experience that it worked/works... :)

I personally think that the way the infra levels are set up in this game favors specialization. Especially since people with one method of income can just ramp up production (turn usage) when conditions are ideal.

If you consider the limitations of the market however, and the fact that the supply of the market may not be sufficient to satisfy Valja`s hunger diversification becomes more viable.

Personally I think that the closer you get to max infra the more reasonable it is to diversify.

VALJA, the difference between those two basic strategies (We`ll call 1 infra type "Specialization" and your tactic of a variety of infra types "Diversification").

Specialization:
Pros:
In Ideal market conditions is far more profitable (more efficient)
Cons:
In a market that isn`t ideal is far less profitable (Risky)

Diversification:
Pro:
In a less than Ideal market provides a stable income (Safe)
Con:
In an Ideal market it is less profitable than Specialization (Inefficient)

To summarize, diversifying your income is much like diversifying a stock portfolio, it is safer, and in most cases a more mature choice. specializing on the other hand is riskier but stands to profit more.

and in conclusion the majority of GCers are immature.

If you use infra on producing cg`s to sell to your own pop but the same infra put into commerce or agri would generate more cash - you might find it 1337 that your good`s per turn is +0 but you are a dimwit.

If you went pure down one line of infra you could maximize cash, which is the point for some. An economics textbook will tell you that efficiency, not self-sufficiency, is the way. You can just buy the other things with the surplus cash from that approach.
Consumer Goods are not a necessity, it would be fun if they kept your people happy or something, but they don`t contribute much to a commerce based empire.

now since EvilLoof has brought this thing up... i`m wondering why the simplest rule in life that when you`re having everything without depending on others, you can survive your own better than the rest, is being condemned in SFGC?

why must terrans depending only on commercial according the "textbook" rule? you might have the money BUT not necessarily can buy anything when there`s nothing to buy....

so as for me...

i produce my own food enough for my population, my population won`t starve... IF i`m depending on the market, i might not afford to buy food at higher price or worst when there not even any food at all in the market... IF i have extra food, i can sell it and get extra income...

i produce my own CGs since the food produces RM and i won`t need to buy any CGs frm the market... coz at some servers, it will take days to find any CGs at all in the market... thus, i still can get extra income frm selling the CGs to my population...

and frm all the income i can get, i only need to buy ONLY minerals and ore frm the market... well, IF i want, i still can mine the ore just enough to use by myself and sell for extra income frm the market....

with these channels of income, i can save the money to build ships and their upkeeps... but my point is, i don`t depend on the market for essential items except ore and minerals... so why it`s so wrong in SFGC?

oh i forgot to mention... when someone will attack you for the first time, there will be 2 types... either you`re going to lose planets OR being enslaved...

personally, i never like being enslaved BUT some of your masters might help you... as long you don`t mind paying tribute... a small percentage of your income per turn... your masters could be your mentor IF they`re "nice"... :)

so either way, both attack will give you DP... IF you don`t wish to be attacked again... stay in DP until it runs out...

there are missions to be followed... BUT remember... some of the missions will make you`re out of NP...

IF you had to follow the missions, i advise at least let someone attack you and you`ll get DP for 24 hours or 48 hours depending on the server...

when you`re in DP, don`t build any OFFENSIVE ships... only scouts won`t take you out of DP regardless what PR you`re at...

during this DP, do the easy missions first... and at the same time, this the best time to mine ore by exploring planets...

when you think you had enough and won`t come online again b4 the DP runs out, go below 5000 PR again b4 going offline...

sell the ore and wait for the money... meantime, try to learn more about the game better...

anyway, you can always restart when something go wrong... choose your style of game by trial and error...

you can follow the "textbook" OR write your own book... ;)

you have limited resources when you`re starting this game... try to get positive income per turn b4 researching ships... this can be done by setup the proper combination of infras on the HW...

IF you can`t afford to buy ore to build your HW, build scouts and explore for planet/s then extract the ore frm the planet/s

selling ore is the fastest way to get income in the beginning... research better scout ship first and explore 2 planets at one time and then plunder it when you`ve done with the ore... you`ll need at least 2000 ore to sell in the market...

my personal advise, research Colony Upgrade Level 1 as soon as possible, coz it will be easier to extract the ore...

remember... playing this game isn`t everything about register and start attacking others... set up your empire properly in NP until you`re ready to go out...

depending on which servers, it might take days or weeks when you`re ready to go out... IF you can`t wait, play in RT straight...
