I seem to remember something about `saving` my account while I am unable to access it during vacation. Is this correct and how do I go about doing this?

Go to options, vacation mode and select the time that you will be gone, you will not be able to use turns during this time, so if possible you should build a fleet up and then go into vm as you will not begin to get turns until your vm is expired.
