How do I get more planets without going broke with upkeep of ships? I see people with 600+ planets and I can not get more than 50 without having more upkeep than income...

the best way to keep getting planets especially if you want to continue to explore for them, is to use some turns wthout a fleet and save up some credits to cover the cost of exploring new planets and losing money.
alternatively it is as maraudian says, just attack people for them.

well exploring is ok and gets harder the more planets you have
but once you start going over say 80 planets its alot easier to steal them off other players in combat
