It is best to start out doing the missions, as they will show you step by step the basic features of the game. Making money will be one of them (populating planets and assigning population to work) perhaps it would be wise reading the manual as well ( http://gc.gamestotal.com/i.cfm?p=manual&CFID=2137239&CFTOKEN=49716797 )
