how is loyalty affected is there any way to keep the ppl happy other than rewarding them?

no, only way to increase loyalty is by rewarding them.
Things that affect loyalty in the other direction (decreases loyalty) are if there is not enough food and the people starve to death, also certain artifacts affect loyalty among others.
