What can you tell me about the orbs, what they do, how many types there are and how best to utilise them?

Orbs do nothing, If you build a capsule lab, you can fuse them to make stronger more harmful or rewarding artifacts for your empire or others.
You can look on the artifact site
http://www.freewebs.com/pandoralives/index.html, on the bottom left of the menu is the artifact list, and what they do and how to fuse them into other artifacts.
