The reason is because of the type of the variable used to store it. The particular type is only able to store 2^8 bits. 2^8 is 256 so there is a maximum of 256 values for the research level. Given that level 0 is the starting point, the highest possible value is 255. (0-255 is 256 different values).

Not sure why they revolve back to 254 though. Probably something to do with a very minor glitch in the coding.

hmmmm... i wonder what triggered the bug... as for terran, should you finished the housing bonus mission first OR complete all infras and then only the mission?

as for me, i`ve done the housing mission first then i hit the max... somehow at the end, you still can research as if you can go over the limit of 255 + 2... but after you relogin, it will inform you already max the research level and the total are 255 + 2... lol...

I just dig to spend turns....

an old bug i think, when you finally finish point 255 it just goes back to 254, and lets you research it again, its cool, it makes it easy to burn turns for cash lol, but youll never get that 255 point

i dunno if something triggers it, or if it just happens 0.o

why 254?

yep... Exule is right... 255 + 2 for terran...

255 cumulative research levels. Although some races can bypass this I believe. For example, I know that a terran can research to the max level with commercial and then finish the mission that gives like 2 housing for a grand total of 257.
