Petition Part 2: Viral Upkeep

Well, I haven`t had any PMs objecting to the ideas I set forth and a bunch in support of it, so we`ll go ahead with my three ideas for the first petition. However, as a community, we need to agree on how to deal with the viral upkeep issue before we propose something to Stephen.

(I apologize for not doing this a while ago, I`ve barely been on GC this past week, been quite distracted.)

My preference for this would be to standardize the upkeep of viral ships based on their class. So, destroyers have one upkeep per PR while battleships have another.

Another possibility, one I like even better, would be devising a formula to determine the upkeep of viral ships, similar (although much improved upon) to the old PR formula. This would be complicated to derive, but it would work out better.

Or, the third possibility, which was the original idea WAY back when Stephen almost updated the game, is just a standardized upkeep with respect to PR. PR/1.2 or PR/1.3 were the numbers floating around back then.

Weigh in! Lets decide this thing. We cannot present a petition to Stephen without most of the game being unified. Once we agree on how we want the upkeep to be dealt with (with alternatives being offered to Stephen, so ideally we could pick the numbers we want for all three options I mentioned above so that he can pick whatever he is willing to do) then we can start gathering empire names for the petition. The more people who agree with whatever is on the petition, the less people who will be upset, and the more likely Stephen will be to do the update for us.

You are a newb hunter. I have three successful UWs and I`m on the richest list on all servers but normal, and that`s because I`m a guardian. You may be the oldest viral on GC, but you are completely irrelevant.
R RareHunter
wow your viral on two servers? dam im only the oldist viral account on gc, your opinions must be valid then yawn newb

I`m viral on two servers and I`m still suggesting this change. It needs to be done.

As for what it would apply to... probably only reverse engineered ships. Viral ships would have their upkeeps, if they need to be altered, seperately.

As for the idea about having a factor of change for upkeep... that doesn`t really work. There are some vast differences in upkeeps. A very common practice for virals to choose is pike/pyth/angel. 5x upkeep on pyth and angels is still pretty low, whereas on the pike that makes it`s upkeep higher than the lyth.

yeah I was never viral for too long, but having an upkeep comparable to the strafez is rediculous. I like option 2 personly...... Option 3 makes them too expensive....

How about we leave things the way they are ?????
Because if you wanna go viral go viral, aminer terrans can pawn virals
T Tauren
stop bi.tching it`s been like thios for many years now and works fine...so sod off
G Gronoria
I`ll vote for 3 then :)

If it`s going to be done it may as well be done right. I don`t think it should be too much harder to treat each ship separately, at least in terms of coding.....

How about a scheme whereby the original upkeep is scaled by a factor which depends on race? Miner and terran go down a bit, marauder goes up a lot. Of course pyth and angel are still a lot cheaper than other maru ships so they`d still be a bit of a budget choice, but much improved.

A few numbers I put together quickly, so forgive any errors. Kohoutek will have be be dealt with specially. Under the 1.2/1.3 numbers, this is what upkeep is vs. what it will go to for each factor. I picked some of the biggest ships from each race.

Borrs: Current Upkeep 180, 1.2 would be 376, 1.3 would be 347 (so it would double)
Chiron: 7500, 15401, 14217 (again it would double)
Pyth: 750, 18772, 17328 (increase by a maximum factor of 25)
Angel: 1065, 19338, 17850 (factor of 18)
Lyth: 52052, 25033, 23107 (decrease by about 50%)
Flysch: 5254, 6025, 5562 (slight increase)
Tyr: 14500, 10862, 10026 (decrease of about 25%)
Nirv: 22000, 15025, 13869 (decrease of 30% or more)
Herc: 35000, 37835, 34924 (stay close to the same)

This would have a net effect of making Terran and Miner ships cheaper for upkeep while correcting the Marauder ships to put them in line with others. I don`t like the idea of doubling Borrs and Chirons though. Can those stay the same?

Hmmm, well I`ve never played viral so I`ll just go with number 3 like the rest of y`allz ;)
As long as upkeep goes up I`m happy!
O OnDante
Just to be straight, this change (option 3) would only apply to viral upkeep? And within viral ships, would it apply to all viral ships (Chiron, Borrs, Kohoutek) as well as all ships that are reverse-engineered? I`m working on some sample numbers for it right now. I hate math.
M Moops
I like 1, but 3 is the most practical, so thats my vote =)
R RareHunter
there is no problem with viral upkeep, your a newb. stop trying to change the game just because some viral hands you your butt with an angel/pyth spam yawn
M Maraudian
number 3 would be the lazy easy option so stephen is more likely to do it if ever he does anything
B Biohazard
ill vote for option 3
E Edge
how about lesson the power of viral reverse Engineered ships also

Eg guard ships reversed from Kaz were less powerful than the originals

also you need to consider that stephen had not touch the game code for years.. it will be difficult for any programmer to understand his work after leaving it for some time... so it might pose as a challenge to stephen now... So the easiler the better :P
D Deiloche
The third would definitely be the easiest to implement. The other two... it depends largely on how Stephen coded the game. The way I would have set it up, it would be super easy to implement any of those ideas... however, the game wasn`t coded with C++, it was coded with coldfusion (I think) which I know absolutely nothing about. :P I`m mostly a C programmer, so my knowledge, thus far anyway, is largely procedural.
A ArchAng3l
I think the third is easiest to implement.. In fact stephen propose this idea, so he might feel close to it and be able to do it. Also we just need to decide on a number which might be pretty fast and easy..

The other two ideas is great. Though stephen might not know how to code it or its too difficult for him to care :P
