go to the Manual and Read it, all of it,
then go to your missions, and do what they say, the first 5 will get you going down the right path, do the others on your own time. However that is not the only way you could play the game, there are tons of ways to play, you can explore for planets endlessly or dig for artifacts all day, or whatever.
But the manual will show you how everything works, and you can do whatever you want to from there, if you want a guide on how to be a terran, read the terran guide in the manual. the Walk through is good as well.
