How do I go about getting goods? I don`t seem to be able to buy any on the market.

gregory... it`s better to not have them that try to make your own. They`re not Mandatory, they just give you a little income boost. The only people it makes a big difference to are Tax based empires.
if u cannot buy them on the market u can make your own but its not as profitable as ur main income style that u research infra for.
all you do is build industry on ur planets and buy some raw materials (1 raw material makes 4 goods and is used up in the process just like minerals are wen u build shis) build enough industry to have a slight possitve goods a turn and u should be ok
but the best option as u proberly know is to simple buy them urself off the market.
