I`m assuming you are Terran as everyone starts out as that race.
First of all, don`t try to make goods. It`s ok to have no consumer goods. basically they`re a boost to your income, rather than a necessity. The only race that shouls really worry about industry (The infrastructure type that produces Consumer Goods) is Aspha Miners. AS a Terran you should research Commecial Infrastructure ONLY. This will give you the best income. Once you`ve built up a littel cash, buy your CG`s from the market...
It will take a while for you to get much in the way of income... just build up all your planets and explore or fight for new ones... research commecial while your in DP and you`ll be making good money in no time!
