there are a number of ways to play this game: you can play by following the missions, or you can try to explore for lots of planets, or you can try to be the best fighter there ever was, or you could build the strongest empire, reach the highest power on the server, reach the most planets, set off the UW, collect all the artifacts, or have the strongest economy, and/or any combination of these
frankly your question was very broad, so i gave a broad answer, but if you want some direction, go to the manual, and read just about everything, expeccially FAQ, and the Walkthrough, and the Useful guides section as well
