If you prefer not to become a Paid User you can still finish the game via the "special missions".

My question is how can I get the special missions

you dont get the special missions, every empire (except guardians) can do them.
and actually, there is only one special mission, it is the ultimate weapon. also known as UW
to do this you reaserch the kalzul artifact, then reaserch another artifact, then the hektar and loktar, and activate them in the projects section by spending 200,000,000 + and 500 some turns on it, each. Then, when you activate the UW, there is a 48hr period of which it gets ready to go boom! except, during these 48 hours, you come out of dp, you have to stay above 1 mil power, your dp only lasts 1 hour, and if your homeworld is attacked you lose. oh yeah, and everyone can attack you while you are out of dp, from ANY power rating, and you cant attack.
