How come sometimes when I research I gain money and sometimes I lose money?

because ships cost money to keep and your empire gets money from population so if u have ships it goes down and you can reaserch things to increase money earned like housing for taxes minerals to sell agriculture to sell food commercial for terrans industry to make and sell goods
