Quick Dev Blog and some basis on the near-term future of GC from Ren

Disclaimer: This is the unofficial ramblings of just one person. Take it all with a grain a salt, just meant to be mildly informative.

Over the last 5-6 months we`ve managed to get GC onto a fairly consistent patch schedule, and are tracking into getting the game to playable shape for the modern era (mobile friendly, better UI, nicer to new players etc). Player growth from that alone is improving in solid fashion:
- 2-3x as many players online as average
- 3x # of battles being fought per day
- Closing in on double the unique empires logging in each day

Now we didn`t exactly start with much so it isn`t huge, but we`re happy to see the updates and improvements are helping, and keeping people playing longer as well as bringing in much needed new faces. Over the next couple of months, we`d like to really step up in those areas, and when we get to releasing the next major patch (#110), we intend to make a much stronger push to bring in new blood.

Patch #110 will include two major things to help this. The largest bit of feedback we have gotten from nearly every fresh player who has tried GC is that losing all ability to progress after just 7 minutes not checking in does not feel good. Between that and the success of large turns, we`re working on a system we are calling `Overflow Turns` that will allow you to bank some turns after being offline for a period of time, but at a slower rate. This should open the game up to many more people who can only check in a few times per day, but while still keep being online and active significantly advantageous. This will be a fairly large change to GC so we are taking our time before bringing this to life.

The second thing is a recruit or referral system to encourage people to bring their friends to play. The rewards will not be massive, but a classic
refer-a-friend and gain something after they play for 30 days, or paid credits granted to you if any of your referals make a purchase.

More details to come in the future and patch #110 will be posted some time before it is uploaded, and we have some more minor patches scheduled in between to keep up with bug fixes, UI improvements, and other small feature additions like the recent fed flags.

After the release of Patch #110, we also intend to step up (or start, really) our marketing efforts, both in terms of purchasing paid ad space, and getting our pipeline of social media and online platform posts / responses running in full. We are likely to shoot out a full e-mail blast to all the accounts that have been registered in the last many years, however we would very much like to target more people who have not tried the game before, instead of only getting folks who used to play back.

Beyond talking about that particular patch, we have a number of major feature additions/revisions we are discussing (and are open to feedback/ideas about).

Major talking points that we know need addressing currently include:

Federations - Feds need a reason to exist beyond a name and a fed war bonus. We want to add things that give players more reason to be in a fed, both for the fed and for the player. This ties in with incentivizing players and feds to fight for the ranks more, rather than just bragging rights or seeing your PR Listed at the top of the rankings page. Potential ideas here include a set federation war system, where you are matched or engage in a war with another federation for a pre-determined about of time. We also think federations should we involved in fed-wide logistics. Leading a fed and getting involved in federation wars should involve a lot more, in general.

Loosely related to:

The Ultimate Weapon - Staying awake for 48 straight hours is kind of antiquated design. Between that idea and the turn cap on RT being raised to 90, it is incredibly difficult to pull off an Ultimate Weapon currently, so much so that the galaxy hasn`t been reset in many years. Revamping the UW to be more of a federation-wide thing or "group project" is probably the ideal way to go.

Missions - This is well underway but all races need missions after the tutorial Act, and current missions can use a revamp so players aren`t forced into a specific economic path. Making missions more interesting as well.

Lore - We want to add and improve the lore around GC. The story surrounding the current in-game universe and the history of the races, among other things.

Events - We are working on the creation of an `event calendar` so to speak. Running different kinds of events every year on a schedule, so players can plan ahead and participate as they wish. We want to vary the types of events that are being run (not just UW or NPC Attacking events), and generally give players occasional fun and exciting things to do that are outside the scope of regular day-to-day gameplay.

Please keep in mind anything not detailed in official patch notes is entirely speculation and may or may not come to fruition, I just wanted to give people a general idea of whats being discussed, and a loose idea of the near-term future for GC.

This is obviously not everything that`s being developed or worked on, just an outline. I probably forgot some big stuff even.

All of this is of course happening while development on the new version of UC continues (blog will be posted in the future in regards to UC).

Feel free to discuss ideas, game direction etc or anything mentioned below!

We`ve actively discussed achievement or merit trees for both federations and individuals, that falls into the category of `big stuff I forgot to put in the post`. That`s a big thing I think would help a lot, just needs to be carefully managed to ensure it remains balanced, or part of it can even just be cosmetic.

With Targs recently coming back on board, he`s actually in the process of creating a lot more art for the game, I think you are 100% right about that and it`s in the works as well.

Appreciate you bringing those up, I knew I missed a few major things!

Thank you for the update. These kind of communications are most welcome. I have a few thoughts:
1. Regarding paid ad space, most people use ad blockers these days so it would make sense the primary marketing push should use other methods
2. The overflow turn idea is a great idea. While I understand it makes fundamental changes to the game, I agree it is needed to attract players other than the terminally online.
3. All AI written content needs to be rewritten by human hands. AI written content is easily spotted, and a turn off for most players. This will be important before the marketing push.
4. The artifact screen needs a major rework, too many clicks
5. Adjacent to the federation and mission idea, more goals for players to achieve is likely to increase activity. Maybe there can be a sort of achievement system or something. We also don’t want to take away the sandbox elements.
6. More artwork elements would be enjoyable and being flavor.

Much appreciation to the dev team, as this is a passion project for you guys.
