In Exul`s game guide he says to always use
balanced stacking.
Is this correct or is there an advantage to spamming.
I`ve read in the forum that people spam as a strategy.

As joker said it is easier to counter spams, stacking is always advised i always stack and 9/10 ive defended and attacked successfully. Sometimes spams can be useful for doing large amounts of damage to a stack, in the end it is up to you to find the best way that suits you.

Attacking with a spam and you probable win most battles but its easier for others to counter attack you as your fleet is simple
Attacking with a stack and you will probable have a higher chance to win 3 planets but it takes vital time to built your stack leaving you venerable
Defending with a spam and you will probable give the opponent an easier time to counter stack against your fleet
Defending with a stack and you will probable give the opponent a harder time to counter stack against your fleet
