I think Coll and maru are reliably, a mid to low PR race.. Imagine a poor little coll with 1 planet finding a 125 mediocre C3 cluster.. what are the chances of him defending himself?
As the system is now, you can control how fast you climb PR.. generally you can (if you want) Keep a fleet strong enough to defend the planets you have, and since you explore 1 at a time, you have the chances to pick what you want. Collective`s bonus is for food mostly. As things are now, Terrans are vastly overpowering them in terms of food production (I don`t think this should be. Collectives SHOULD make more food than any other races, just as Aspha miners make more minerals than any others). If a collective finds a C3, a C2, it`s basically dead weight. You cannot grow food on it, it raises your PR a lot, and your fleet would still be small to protect whatever planets you had up to that point.
The other races that can climb in PR quickly should have no issue defending a C3/2 they find, either because their income is good enough, or because they just have good enough ships to defend `em.
I know I`m annoying with collectives, what can I say? I love that race, and right now they`re so gimped compared to others there`s no reason to play them. Marus finding C1/2/3 makes sense, they can fill it up with pop and destroy them. If Collectives still can`t grow food on assimilated clusters, that just makes them a poorer maru (Kind of like, and I quote Wiggly here, Commercial Virals are just poorer Terrans).
