I`d like to open up a discussion of a hard restart for Real Time (RT) server as a means of revitalizing the server, an experiment of sorts and see how things would change.

I know this has been asked for & refused in the past.
Than updates were promised. Some where done, others not.

How does GC-RT stand on a server wide reset.
Lose it all, and start from 0.

My guess, even i have been in favor of a reset of GC this will die a quite dead.
That say`ec, who do you vote why and under what conditions would you agree to a Hard Reset?

Cheers

I don`t care either way, but I just want to point out that a reset will solve nothing. your average newbie knows nothing about artifacts or how unbalanced the game is. and by the time they realize what a disadvantage they are really at trying to control the ranks they will have been playing for at least a month, then they`re hooked anyway... all a restart would do is make the already experienced yet newer players happy, piss off the true vets, and I would guess drive some away. if anything a reset would discourage new players because they would be contending with the vets.

Quit, or chased off? The poor man feels like he doesn`t even have the right to touch GC any more lol. He also seems to hate conflict and always seems overwhelmed whenever he comes online with the chat. I think the last straw was when he wanted to do away with the 4 different energy types for ships and just make it one type.

I seem to recall the whole staff revolted at that one and a lot of folks quit or were removed.

And before that, I remember in 06/06 when everyone always groaned when Stephen made changes only to break the game and cause problems because his coding is so awful.

It is what it is. =/

At one point as a whole we have to do things that better the game. To accommodate 10 older players and sacrifice the growth is not one of these things. I love the players we have, but growth is the key to fixing a lot of the balance problems. There will be hard choices and no one can ever please everyone. So if losing 10 to gain 50-100 is the choice I think it`s clear what needs to happen. As far as a reset being foreseen in the beginning, I don`t think it was. But that don`t meen its not what it needs. Can`t expect any game creator to forsee the future, that`s why games get updates and changes all the time. Just so happens our game creator quit. Lol

Our goal is to help pick up the pieces of this game and make it more appealing and fun to play. We want to get back the long term players that went inactive and bring in some new ones. I don`t see how shooting ourselves in the foot is going to help our back pain.

I do see the up side to this but its very narrow and I don`t see how a hard restart would make things better for everyone. Just my opinion on the matter and it doesn`t mean I`m right .

I really dont see how a hard reset will solve anything. It will probably just scare some of those ppl away that already a struggling to hang on.
P PistolPete
You can do it if you like to. But i think i would quit the server then.

I vote no , why because the initial gameplay was around the idea of no hard reset.

My conditions if there was a hard reset would probably be that Dark Marauders and Kalzul became playable races :p

That`s why after the initial hard restart, we`d have an established 2-4 year period before the next hard restart occurs depending on server speed. And of course, each time all TB players get a ton of BTC to jump start the server and get past all the initial research and infrastructure stuff.

I think the best course of action is to set a hard date, maybe a year, maybe 2 years, just so everyone knows what`s coming and can plan accordingly. That, in itself, would probably spur a lot of activity. :P

I think the best way to draw consensus from the community is to first establish total number of accounts and establish a quorum of say 80 or 90%. If 80 or 90% of the server doesn`t vote, it doesn`t pass. Of those voting, if it doesn`t pass by overwhelming majority of over 80%, it doesn`t pass. Voting would take place over 2 months and can be changed at player`s request, and this vote can be made public on a separate thread.

Again, I would only touch turn based, prolly starting with slow.

I am for this on the TB servers for the exact reason EE hit on. It`s a impossible task to compete against established empires. Level playing field cannot be even close to achieved. For this reason I think it would help keep new players stay. The only thing is, in a couple years we will have same issue all over again.

I think instead of a hard reset after 1 UW, we can make it a 3 UW attempt before everything goes south. It will force more people to actually attempt to make a UW attempt sort of like a rat race and more people below to resist/defend against. We can probably give people who made an UW attempt a huge boost ontop of the current 1.

It`s kind of a double edge sword i think. We might need to rebalance some races if we actually do this. I reckon that a lot of people will be going A.miner after this.

And the famous Wall of Text seals the deal :)

I just want to reiterate that i like your idea, Personally i`m not against it, But it is my also my opinion that what you hope will happen and the desired results you are looking to get from doing this on RT won`t live up to your expectations and if this were implemented there would be no going back, because there is also no way for us to restore peoples accounts to their pre-restarted selfs so it would be a one way ticket.
E EphemeralEternity
Well alot of people haven`t spoke up because they know the likelihood of this idea ever coming to fruition.

You have to think about how far it is to begin a policy of restarting people when for 10 years no one has ever had to worry about it there was no disclaimer stating that in X amount of years you will be forced to lose things.

Gordo`s are a major issue on RT but some people have spent over half a decade gordoing their own planets, others have spent $100`s of real world money buying gordo`s from others for years and yes while again this does create huge balancing issues it has also helped those unable to gain paids themselves the ability to get a paid. So yes there would be quiet a few who would quit over that and yes some may return but they would also never be as active as they once were.

Alot of players started this game when they were in highschool or college when they had more free time but now they`re working and have familys and when they get the time they log in to fight and what have you but would never really be able to rebuild their empires to become competitive again.some would quit from that because why spend more time investing into something you already did years ago when you have more important priorities.

I can see there`s some support for this idea, but there are plenty people we haven`t heard from, and some that never even bother looking at the forums and for me to even consider talking to stephen about restarting RT i would want 90% approval for the idea, then the likelihood of stephen even talking about the idea would be remote,

As far as my stance on this, i`m neither for nor against a restart. I don`t have anything to lose myself, my planets are no prize and my arti stash is laughable infact the only thing i`d actually care about losing is this "Empire age 2668 day(s)", which is one of the reason i will never UW.

Though it wouldn`t make me more active in game, infact i would probably actually play even less after a total restart, There`s a few others like me that would probably stick around but we`d do an infra level a day maybe build a fleet once a week to 3-4 mil pr and then just continue that from restart to restart until we finally decide to move on.

Also as far as Rt itself is concerned it`s not all that bad of a gap between those with old accounts and land, within a month or so a miner can build up to 100 mil+ pr once a week, for other races there`s a bigger gap but generally within 6 months or so a person who does play 6-8 hours a day on average can usually fight in the upper ranks some can even stay up there depending on how decent their luck is on acquiring planets.

Now TB servers would probably see a increased activity boost from a hard reset, especially on servers where empires have gained massive amounts of Artis from either age or from living in the goldy-locks zone of dig times. where the only way you can hope to change this is to become old yourself and invest the years, or get friends with arties themselves, because if you`re starting on say normal, you aren`t able to be on during dig times, then no matter how good you are at fighting you will always be lagging behind until all the old empires restart and thats hoping they don`t live in zones perfect for digging. No amount of skill can help you strip planets off of someone with 3 months of instant turns at their finger tips and 100+ infra on a server that takes over 18 months of turns just to get that 100 infra. at least not on your on or until you bank up some infra and arties of your on.

but it still wouldn`t be all that fair to restart things there either.

Thats why i would rather push to get coding access so that DM sever could be fixed and modified so that it could be used as a server where people can sign up to play Knowing that within X amount of months their accounts will be restarted.

I really really had the feeling this would explode, but all in all ppl who read the forum are positive about this idee.

Is this something Staff can pick up and have a vote on it?
Perhaps Stephen can do his job and help us a bit with this.

EE or BW, can you have a serieus look at this?
J Jammer
"now we have to force those people to restart themselves"

So in other words, there could be a mass restart, if everyone just made a pact to go restart their empires.
T TheEdge
I am for the hard reset idea being a player who usally rather low in the ranks it would be fun to be able to play side by side with vets...I too don`t see peeps quiting as it seams like a lot of peep quit due to being board not because they have to play the game just my thoughts though....so yes on the hard reset idea.
E ear614
I agree with EE, because if players know their empires are going to be restarted they won`t complain and end up leaving after it happens.
S Slavyzz
Regardless of whether it is possible I support the idea of hard resets on RT when player UW`s are successful.
