GC Revamped

Hello everyone, I haven`t been active on GC this past year due to work and other things, but now I have some free time again. If you remember, I was working on a revamped version of GC in 2011. Life got busy and I put that on hold. But now, i`m thinking about starting it back up again.

Before I even start, I want to reemphasize that I don`t every want to put anything live on the web without Stephen`s permission because coding the game is the easy part (maybe not that easy) but its coming up with the idea that is difficult.

I am not looking to gain any monetary benefits from doing this, I have a day job (that has nothing to do with computers). I am doing this because i want to learn to become a better programmer and I like the challenge. IF stephen does want to update GC, then i have no problem supplying the code to him.

That being said, here is the link to the forum post I made about 2 years ago.

PART 1:
http://gc.gamestotal.com/hef.cfm?&8881&f=hef_detail&hi=10572&ch=100

PART 2:
http://gc.gamestotal.com/hef.cfm?&8382&f=hef_detail&hi=10820&ch=100

When I started this, I was a newbie in PHP so there were some big flaws in design and coding, so I am going to start of from scratch again.

This being 2013, I have been officially playing GC on and off for 10 years. I started in November 2003 even though my current empire age doesn`t reflect it. Like it or not, GC has not kept up with the changes in the web over the last decade. I understand Stephen may not want to take up the challenge again due to personal reasons, but I am going to try anyways.

Hopefully this will give me some motivation to keep going!

Is copyright even an issue in this case?

With a complete new coding, new names and a few new features wouldnt it be enough to avoid any legal stuff? Not to mention the hassle of actually bringing this before a court who would bother doing anything about it. Good luck with that.

I don`t give a rat`s you-know-what about Stephen personally. My concern is for AC. If AC can take certain actions to avoid legal hassles with Stephen, then he needs to take them. This means reaching some kind of sensible licensing agreement.

Sorry to say, but you don`t need to actively copyright something for it to be copyrighted to you. Even a blog posting from a private website is nominally copyrighted according to US law.
O Omegian
@ Rag, due to his standing, not sure how much copyright protection he has done. That being said, I am not sure its worth the licensing fees either because of the coding A|C would do in comparison to the ancient coding of Ste. I would be against anything to do with Ste other than what has already been done as a foundation level for A|C`s copy of GC while additions and much better coding to implement things that was on Ste`s bucket list since ... 2001? Anyhow, that is my opinion in a nutshell and lastly, Go A|C

Which can be avoided if we make a different game with similar elements! Which i`m doing

"First of all Stephen will not share rights under any circumstances unless their being paid for in full. He is a greedy and selfish person who won`t do anything for GC because its self sustaining and doesn`t require his attention. Second of all sharing rights would draw players away from this game costing him what little money he makes. "

This is where some form of licensing arrangement must be made with Stephen involving revenue sharing. AC can simply start charging something in the new game and then agree to pay a fixed amount to Stephen, regardless of how things go, up to the average yearly revenues he typically gets.

It simply comes down to the use of intellectual property, and Stephen can actually make a ton more money this way simply by allowing others to run alternate servers featuring this game. All he has to do is collect the money and benefit from the success of other people using his ideas without any of the risk.

Again, it`s simply a matter of setting up a method of intellectual property licensing and deciding fair value for fees and revenue sharing.

After that, the only question is, how much would Stephen demand in 5-10 year licensing fees?

The current color themes are pretty good imo.

If you need a kick starter to do this I wouldn`t have a problem donating.
O Omegian
Almost want to pitch in a kickstarter event for A|C

Lol "prefer" or have gotten used to over eons; still you`re right to ask for opinions.
The in-game color scheme isn`t terrible, but the forum is ugly as sin. If you wanted an opinion. :P

Dark look for sure.
S SpikyBlueMef
Definately the dark look, the white look really strains my eyes
A AlphaCentauriOP
do you guys like the default dark look to gc or do you prefer a white background, just curious

Alpha, you got my support and you know it!

It is a small community, but extremely loyal given the combined years most of us have spent on here, or left then come back again. It shows that we enjoy the competition, comradeship, and the overall design of the game. I know that is why I keep playing off and on again, hoping that someday this will get updated and revamped to keep up with the games out there now. There is no reason why this game should be out-dated given the support we have all given it. I remember years ago Jaxvier was trying to create a game similar to this; and I know many have thought about it. Stephen, lets revamp this one and surpass what it was 10 years ago. And if not, oh well, back to SWTOR I go.

Interesting that so many of our small community are undertaking this challenge

Bravo Sir I commend you for your effort, I remember this from 2011 and thought it was a brilliant idea but you have several things going against you. First of all Stephen will not share rights under any circumstances unless their being paid for in full. He is a greedy and selfish person who won`t do anything for GC because its self sustaining and doesn`t require his attention. Second of all sharing rights would draw players away from this game costing him what little money he makes.

In my opinion , and I`m just throwing this out their since I will probably never make it to a staff position I say screw this game and just turn the switch off for good and let`s round up all our friends, enemies , and frenemies and let`s find some other game to take over . As it is the only joy I get any more here is helping new players
