Only increase in income that results from loyalty is tax, that`s it...

Max loyalty is 5000, you lose loyalty if you get enslaved and punished by your master, or if your colony is lost to another player. If you`re sick of researching, you can try rewarding for loyalty for whatever pop you have. i think there comes a point where you earn more by increasing loyalty than by researching

Nothing really. Loyalty only really affects tax income empires, so if you have anything besides housing income, you shouldn`t worry. Loyalty will increase tax income if it is higher.
