Do the missions, they guide you through pretty well. Or join my fed and I`ll teach you :P
Another easy way to earn money in the game is to explore for planets, mine the ore off of them and sell it on the market.

as a terran the simplest way of making money is by assigning land on planets to comercial and researching comercial infrastructure on the research page. (the higher you research the more money you make)
you can buy food etc from the market to feed your population then you can buy minerals etc to build a fleet and go to war.
