yes fleets are a money sink, but only if you spend large amounts of time building large expensive fleets.
Most players on RT (where the issue is) actaully make money upto and above 50 mill PR, or much much higher if using Strafez, so fleet upkeep for them is not a money sink, just a way to break even, or minimize thier income.
Warmonger: Are you saying that the over 50 billion minerals locked up in the RT empires right now isn`t enough? We do need a UW, thats the main mineral/ore/credit `out`. We havn`t seen one in a very long time. Thus it as a total resource removal tool isn`t present. That`s the real innate problem here after looking at it.
If your saying `big empires shouldn`t buy minerals cos it means the small ones don`t get much`. That argument is flawed for the reason I stated above. The big empires do need a constant supply of mienrals to make their fleets to fight high PR, but true no where near what they/we buy up. The problem with mineral hoarding, and ore hoarding also to a much more limited degree, is poor game design and forsight.
The game was designed to have UW`s going off on a regular basis. Now that this doesn`t happen due to it either being unappealing to loose all your hard work (UW reward still doesn`t seem to be incentive enough for the up to years work into an established empire required to UW) and also due to the amount of support needed. Doing NPC UW`s to reset the markets, whilst the smartest thing to do, generally results in alot of buthurt players claiming it`s `unfair` but they never actually attempt to down it. Go figure.
In your last post Warmonger you say that mineral sales are fundamental to the game for miners. Yes it is, and always will be even if the mienrals where able to be removed from the game. Just look at right after a UW. The mienral markets are flooded for a few days after as the miners try to restock cash, and players restock stockpiles. The ore argument is a moot point, you only need 150k max per player, most of the newer empires only need 50-70k cos they only make 15-20k C2`s and are happy with 6k+ larges, as opposed to old empires only settling for 9-10k+.
We could fix the current market issue by doing a BM for minerals. However doing that would result in all of the miners QQing about being unable to sell their stocks, whilst the emires with max cash would love it as a way to invest creds to minerals, even if they loose out on 50% resale (I THINK the BM minerals are at 1,500 creds per and ore at 15k per, been a while).
If you want a more long term solution, give suggestions on how to make the A Miner race more attractive to players in some way. I`m sure you can come up with some amazing ideas Warmonger, lets hear em :P
