When you lose money it means your outgoings are larger than your incomings.

Normally the outgoing that causes this is your fleet.

Take the following steps to correct this.

1. Disband your fleet
2. Sell any minerals, food, ore or anything you have in the market. Sell below the current price, so it is basically guaranteed to sell, and sell fast, but just a few units below.
3. Wait an hour or so for your stuff to be sold and the cash to come through (normally takes far less than 2 days but just to be safe)
4. If your still in debt click the income button at the top of the screen if the part that says "profit/loss before goods" is positive then just use turns until you are out of debt.
If it is negative however you have two options.
1. Beg in chat for GC`ers to use credit gain artifacts (doesnt work well with large debts.
2. Restart your empire and try again (options screen)

For future reference it`s best to avoid, having a negative income per turn, unless you are a producing race
(ex: food or goods producer) then calculate your per turn income by what the current price of what you produce is,
times how much you make per turn, that in essential is your `amount of credits per turn`.
Unless you have a very large reserve, enough to cover a fair amount of turns used at your current loss per turn,
Iit`s best to stay in positive, so you don`t go into debt, as that can result in the restart of your empire.
