If you just started then I`m assuming you are terran. You`re going to want to invest in commercial infrastructure research and finish research all of the tech tree excluding the kal zul overmind project and (at least until you have everything else researched) the capsule lab. To make some quick cash, you can strip mine planets for ore. The following link is very useful for learning the game.
