Stagnant Empires

So I was considering things lately what with the food market and bot crab - thinking on how in the past this was never necessary, the market would balance itself out.

I`ve noticed that VERY few people restart these days, and people are just sitting on empires, playing the same race forever. Almost no one I know has a new empire, and even looking at myself I`m over 400 days old. For the first 6 years of my playing gc I never had an empire over 150-200 days. It was very rare for me to get even that high, now I look and find myself at 400 =/

Somethings definitely changed around - with the exception of a UW no one restarts these days for the sake of playing another race :(

Thoughts?

lol..not long ago some guys were considered to be players that throw their empires out of the window doing uws...well maybe they are the only ones that got the point of the game...you start one empire and you finish it off with a uw. there are many empires throughout the big federations that could easily UW but they just sit on their massive lands. which i can understand also somehow. took them long to get that far but that proves your point islander. they are the ones stalling the game!

Yeah islander...I was talking about TB for my first point, lol.

i still think that the people who stick around today to play RT are more predisposed to hoard, rather than constantly change races. The people who enjoyed constantly changing races might have also enjoyed constantly changing games to play. Hence they aren`t playing anymore.

I think one of the biggest factors with the market is still game mechanics. It`s waaaay too easy to be a food producer (and some would argue, way more fun :S) compared to a high base PR tax empire. I mean come on...my guardian empire on ultra has almost 6 mil base PR, who wants to play that? :(

Kelti - You are out of your mind if you think terrans are broken or the most unappealing race. They have an excellent set of ships, and two very good income sources, both of which are fairly easy.

Ned - You obviously never played except in the last few years - Empires over 300 days tended to be among the oldest, excepting turn based of course. It`s a lot of fun to do so on RT, I mean, it takes an experienced player what - 3-4 days to become a high power empire on RT, so long as you have a good chunk of spare time for those days. It keeps the gameplay fresh and rather interesting.

So as to your first point you are very wrong - As I noted in the OP this is a somewhat recent phenomenon, the start only dating back roughly 3-4 years.

The one thing I do agree with is gordos on RT. They pose a lot of problems to the game I believe. Not the least of which is they discourage hoarding, which discourages fighting. Makes for a very stale war game. But too many people are too invested in them to do anything about it.

terrans are actually pretty decent.

just not at UWing, lol

terran`s need to be fixed for one and only 1 reason.. to make people who start playing this game as a free game the terran need to be more likable to play so players will stay!!

terran right now is the most unappealing race to play. perhaps that`s why no new empires want to stick around??

*wonders how many people will restart as "terran" if the updates were applied to "terrans"

maybe if terran UWs were made easier...this wouldn`t be as big of a problem. hmmmm

Why should people restart? Unless there is a force reset of the game, restarting puts you at a pretty big disadvantage. The playerbase is declining, probably because those who often restarted their races in GC prolly decided to `restart` their interest in GC for other things, lol.

I have three possible hypothesis for the market:

1: Too many tax miner UWs (on TB, mostly). Once a tax miner got huge (with the possible exception of you, islander) chances are...he/she UWed. With the recent SB changes...perhaps this trend will be reversed slightlly?

2: Game mechanics ->> as empires get bigger...it`s way easier to play a 400 planet agri producer, rather than a huge base PR 400 planet tax empire. Hence, I find that food tends to lower itself naturally in the long term on almost all servers.

3: gordos on RT, lol. This one should be self-explanatory

i always restart i like to explore the other races and dont like sitting doing the same thing for a long time i might settle as a guard most likely
